How to Choose a Spinning Rod

a variety of spinning rods laying on the boat

Many anglers who are just learning the basics of fishing choose to use a spinning rod when casting for crappies, walleye, or other species. Choosing the right spinning rod comes down to a few different factors to consider based on your location, application, and target species. Our Fishing Experts highlight the basics of spinning rods including rod length, action, and power so that you’re able to find the perfect rod for the season ahead.

What is a Spinning Rod?

A spinning rod is a type of fishing rod that is equipped with a spinning reel. With a spinning rod, your reel sits below the rod and the line guides point down. Compared to a baitcasting rod, this design makes them ideal for casting lighter lures and reeling in smaller fish.

Spinning rods are among the most popular for inexperienced and experienced anglers alike because they are lightweight, easy to handle, and versatile.

Key Features when Choosing a Spinning Rod

There are three main features to consider when buying a new spinning rod: length, action, and power.

Spinning Rod Length

When selecting a spinning rod, the first thing to consider is length. Most spinning rods range from 5 to 10 feet long. Many beginner anglers start with a 7-foot rod for greater control and versatility.

Where you plan on fishing influences the length of rod you need. For instance, if you’re fishing in tight cover, like thick weeds or brush piles, then you’ll want to go with a shorter rod. On the other hand, if you’re fishing open water, then you may want to consider a longer rod that allows you to cast farther. A general rule of thumb for beginners to remember is that the closer to the boat you’re fishing the shorter the rod you’ll need. If you’re casting away from the boat, you’ll want a longer rod.

Spinning Rod Action

The action of a spinning rod refers to where the rod bends. There are many different types of actions with popular options being extra fast, fast, and moderate.

  • Extra Fast Action: These rods have a super responsive tip that makes them ideal for lighter jigs and smaller lures.

  • Fast Action: Rods with a fast action still have a responsive tip but with more of a bend. Fast-action rods may be better for casting light lures and reacting quickly to a strike.

  • Moderate Action: These are ideal for trolling larger cranks or casting/trolling small to medium size crankbaits. Because of their action, they have more casting distance than the fast action rods.

Spinning Rod Power

The power of a rod describes the amount of pressure it takes for the rod to flex. There is a wide range of different rod powers to accommodate the variety of lure weights and line sizes. You’ll see everything from ultra-light to extra-heavy as options when choosing a spinning rod. A light-power rod is typically best for fishing with lighter lines and baits, while a medium- or heavy-power rod may be better for fishing with heavier lines and baits.

Knowing the basics such as rod length, action, and power will help you find the perfect spinning rod for the season ahead. Pairing your new rod with the right spinning reel will make the ultimate combo for success on the water.
