If you leave the batteries in they’ll drain from the panels that charge off the D batteries. If you take the batteries out between use, the panels will drain and need to be charged when you put the batteries in. The panels will have to charge up which drains the batteries which puts you at a disadvantage right when you get to the camp site. I have to replace 8x D cell batteries every few months I go camping which is crazy because of the cost of these batteries. If you let it sit for even longer, everything is dead and at this point, nothing will come back on with new batteries. Not all panels light up when mounted in the base unit. All batteries (8 D-cells and 12 AAA's) drain RAPIDLY when the lantern is not in use. Fully-charged batteries drain to nothing within 2-3 weeks of not being used while in this lantern.
