It's my first bait-caster. I am used to a 6 foot spinning or spin-cast setup but recently moved to a home on a lake that has a few bass in it so I decided to try a bait-caster. There is a learning curve to it as far as setup to get long casts and avoid backlashes. There are plenty of you tube videos out there to help but nothing beats trial and error. I am using 8# test mono and I am pleased with how well it performs. I am also getting used to the slightly longer length and my other rods are starting to feel a little short. It is a great looking combo and I feel like it's more than a starter set. So when we got to our destination, I headed to the closest sporting goods store and looked through their fishing gear. I had planned to pick up a cheap, but decent baitcast and spinning combo for my getaway. I looked at multiple setups and decided on the 7 foot medium heavy Max X combo. The rod has a moderate taper, and the 6.4 reel is perfect for cranking, swimbait presentations. I spent 2 days fishing with it, and I was really impressed. The feel of the rod was really good for this price point. The reel was easy to adjust and had good casting distance. You cannot go wrong at this price for this combo. Keep in mind I've been fishing most of my life, and my every day combos are Shimano Zodias', Daiwa Tatula Elite rods with Curado and Tatula reels.
