We paddled from Three Forks, MT to St. Louis, MO, which is about 2,341 miles. \n\nI wanted a tent that would be easy and quick to set up. A tent that was fairly compact and lightweight, yet durable. I also wanted a tent that would be big enough for me to comfortably spend a day or two confined to the tent during sustained rain storms. The tent also needed to have room for lots of my gear in the tent with me, or at least under the rain fly, to keep it dry. The Blacktail met all of those requirements and more. \n\nI really liked having two doors on the Blacktail, which made it versatile and easy to setup. I never had to worry about which side the door was on, because there was a door on both sides. It was also nice to know that if my partner's tent had failed, we could have both fit into the Blacktail if needed. \n\nIt also helped that the Blacktail fit my budget and didn't break the bank. I feel like it was one of the best values, out of all of my equipment. \n\nThe Blacktail proved to be a wise choice and served my needs for the entire trip, withstanding nearly three months of daily use and harsh weather. \n\nOn day Day 46, of our 84 day trip, we were caught off guard by a very strong and dangerous thunderstorm while we camped on the banks of Lake Oahe in North Dakota. I had neglected to tie out the guylines on my Blacktail and only use a total of four ground stakes to secure the tent and rain fly. \n\nThe storm produced 80 mph winds that were sustained for nearly an hour. We had virtually no protection from the wind where we were at. My Blacktail tent performed very well under the circumstances. \n\nIn spite of my negligence to properly setup the tent, and the tent ultimately collapsing during the storm, NOTHING broke, ripped, or tore. Two sections of the aluminum poles got slightly bent. That was the total extent of the damage to the tent. I am not planning to get more then 8 miles back so the weight is really not a concern to me even though its really not that heavy. Its definitely bigger then I expected as I have purchased cheaper 2-person tents in the past that your head was smooshed into the wall of the tent. Bottom of the tent is a little thin so I do suggest running a tyvek type ground cover underneath of it if you are running any type of sleeping pad. I knew But Agnes had a good name so I bought it. I've used this tent for 2 years now and it's been great. It's been thru torrential downpours and winds in the Tennessee mountains and along the Outer Banks of NC. And hasn't had any leaks or other issues at all. The roof vents work great opened up when it's hot and I've closed them up in temps down into the 30's when it's cold to hold heat in. The small pack size is great for kayak camping. I can't say enough good things about the Blacktail 2. I've slept in the tent a few times now, including inclement weather. Once in the winter when it hit 17F and recently during during storms with driving rain. The winter I picked up frost on the inside of the fly with the vents open, would vent doors next time. During the down pour the fly wet out but the inside stayed dry. Nothing flapped in the wind or leaked water. The stakes supplied are plenty. I might spring for nicer stakes, but can't complain at the price point. Much more room than my Quarter dome. Not sure how you make it easier to set up? Match the colors insert the poles clip the clips - put the peak pole on top of the cross poles stakes in the loops. The Big Agnes Blacktail 2 Tent is a three-season tent light enough for the backcountry but strong enough for the front country. The ready-to-pitch design of the Blacktail 2 tent features pre-cut guylines and tensioners for quick set-up. Two fly vents offer increased airflow to keep you cool and comfortable, while the smooth-closing dual-zipper door allows easy access in and out of the tent. The Blacktail 2 also features plenty of room for gear storage, including four interior mesh pockets, two media pockets, and multiple interior loops for attaching gear lofts. With its lightweight yet durable design, the Big Agnes Blacktail 2 Tent is an excellent choice for backpackers looking for a tried and true backcountry shelter.
