{"reviews":[{"id":6960753,"locale":"en_US","rating":4,"title":"I Would Prefer A Scrambled Version","text":"picked up a pre-owned 2023 FX+2 from a kid who beat the heck out of it (cosmetic nicks, slapping chain, out of true wheels, and broken rear fender stay) riding in DC for 3 months. Surprisingly, the motor seemed solid, engaged quickly, and operates very smoothly, which allows for steady cranking up northern VA hills. This smooth motor operation let me to look past surface flaws and sold me on this model. I also wanted higher rolling 700c wheels where most e-bike are 27.5. And the stopping power is incredible. Shimano hydraulic 160mm bolt on discs with MT200 levers and UR300 calipers are precise and perfect. I have other hydro brakes that are nowhere near as exact. This is literally the best braking set up I have ever experienced on any bike.\n\nOnce home, I did some clean up, tightening, and lubing, then deleted the chain guard, fenders and integrated rear rack. Although it is a big seller to have all those additions, most riders use them weekly if that much unless this bike is your only means of transportation. Sadly, I needed Trek LBS to remove a seized frame bolt which cost $28? IMO, without all that extra, the bike looks better, riders faster, and is much quieter. \n\nThe learning curve for balancing optimal motor performance with attaining a workout is ongoing. Of the 3 motor assist settings, 2 is my favorite for a microburst, 3 is for steep hills, and 1 is for added stamina or excessive heat/humidity. I still find myself in 1 more than free pedaling but the fact you can select free pedal so easily is an amazing option to help riders improve fitness on an e-bike platform. Not a fan of the Altus drive train in a 9-speed b/c it is clunky and labored and noisy. I always feel there is a fear missing on the top end or stand up pedaling. There seems to be less synchronicity between how the derailleur and cranks perform together with the very loose chain which actually popped off over a speed bump. \n\nBut this motor and drive train pairing works for what most of us get this bike for, easier climbing or extending our pedal range in miles. You quickly realize higher 2 and 3 bar assist means less distance limiting the true potential of this bike for more than around town. Getting the optional $500 battery add on pack gives you 25 more miles unless riding strictly uphill. I did not push the bike yet but am getting about 30miles per charge so to be able to go twice that distance opens up where you can go on your bike in ways you may never have considered before.\n\nWhere the FX+ loses a star for me is customizing for fit, comfort, and performance. To lose $28 on a bole that should not have seized on a 3-month-old bike is criminal. The pedals were impossible to get any true pedal efficiency with as there is no grip what-so-ever. The wire bead tires at 60TPI may be puncture resistant, but they ride very stiff and harsh. And the Bontrager lock on ergo grips felt like I was holding bricks. But worst for me was the Trek Alpha Gold Aluminum tubing is literally the most jarring ride I have ever experienced. \n\nI believe the size charts are WAY off and that 5'6\" is 100% a size small not M as indicated on the chart. I have spent a lot of $$$ trying to get more comfortable and attain a better fit on this bike. According to the Trek size chart, this size M bike should fit my 5'6\", 31\" inseam frame. But it sits a full 2\"-3\" taller than my Cinelli flat bar gravel bike in size small but with a dialed in fit. I replaced pedals, grips, and saddle but now NEED something to dampen the vibration -- likely a carbon bar. I also require a shorter reach than the OEM 90mm stem provides, but finding said parts has been a challenge with the proprietary aspect of the wired 120 lumen headlight. I literally cannot find a 70mm stem in a comp version ANYWHERE. And remember the taillight was attached to the rear fender which I deleted and now that wiring is zip tied to the seat tube despite my request for the LBS to tuck in inside the frame for $28.\n\nIn time, I will also replace the tires at some point with more off road adaptable or capable tread. Most of us cut through yards or dirt roads or even gravel but the current Schwalbe Reflective Marathon tires have no traction anywhere but pavement. They are doing fine on dry paths but not over roots or rocks and not so great in tall grass that many of us have to get through.\n\nThis is a 4-star bike given the price point and how well the 250-watt motor performs, although others may feel underwhelmed. The 2026 FX1S comes with a 500-watt motor and display, but the bike weighs 10lbs more. To me, saving weight is more of my priority for just a bit less oomph. I don't know that those extra pounds carrying the bike in and out is worth 8 more miles per hour. Where the FX loses a star is how much $$$ in updates have been needed to get that dialed in fit and performance I have come to expect out of my bikes. Other bike models do not require this much alteration to have pain free elbows after a ride. \n\nIf Trek released a scrambled version of this frame with higher BB, GRX drive train/crank, carbon fork (like they have on MTB and Super Commuter e-bike models) for smoothing the chatter, with Pirelli Cinturato Adventure tires, I'd buy it in 3 seconds' flat. Some of us want bikes that are truly ALL ROAD.
