I was surprised at how quickly it responded when I first started riding; both the acceleration and gear shifting were very smooth. What attracted me the most was the overall aesthetic of the bike—simple yet subtly luxurious. I really like the black color, which makes me excited to ride every time I see it. I bought a gen 4 sl5 in December of 2022. I had surgery in January of 23 so it sat for the first couple months of it's life. The iso speed assembly creaks and it's more annoying that the old press fit bottom brackets getting dirty. I had read about seat post slipping but didn't have any issues at first. Once spring hit the bike went off the trainer and the bike hit the road. The creaking is at best annoying, at worst unsettling as it can be pretty load some times. I had some issues with seat post slipping, each time I would apply more carbon paste and it would hold for a couple of weeks and then slip again. In early July the iso speed bolt snapped, it looks to be an aluminum bolt and despite my trek dealer insisting they've never seen that, there are a number of stories online of people having the same issue. The iso speed bolt was replaced. I asked to get the updated binder at the same time but that was not done. After this service the seat post slipped nearly ever ride, multiple times a ride. This may be the fault of my shop but the multiple requests for a new binder went unanswered for a month and a half. End of august, i went to the shop and made the case for the updated part, they also replaced the seat post as months of slipping had chewed it up pretty good. I rode through fall, still some creaking from the iso speed and the seat post slipped a couple of times but was reliable enough i stopped carrying a torque wrench on rides. Thanksgiving morning the iso speed bolt snapped again while on the trainer. More reading online to find some people had their frames replaced but nobody had it long enough to say for sure it was successful. In the end I had the frame replaced with the alloy model. While the bike is now reliable, it is a ~$1500 downgrade from what I bought. My initial review of al this was not published by trek so I am posting again. There are certainly a number of bikes on the road that have been reliable but there are plenty of stories about these being a problem.
