I wish the instructions were more specific about heating and using. The instructions say not to strike with metal objects, and this has me conerned about chopping chip steak meat and veggies on it. You take out one grill grate and set this piece in its place. the cooking surface is then about two inches lower than the grill grates to its left and is that much closer to the flames. Has worked great for me with some veggies. Also serves as an awesome warming station with the flame off underneath it. I thought it was going to be cast iron but its actually enamel coated. I thought I would prefer cast iron but so far this is at least as good. Very sturdy. I have an elevated fire pit with a grate that can swing over the top.
