I also broke my fibula a couple of years ago above my ankle, and rubbing/hitting in that spot can be painful. My big toe often hits the top of boots. I am like the Princess and the Pea when it comes to hiking boots--they often do not fit and often hurt my feet/legs. I needed boots that address all my issues. . . and I am thrilled that to date, have had no problems with the fit on this Arctic 600 side zip boot. Shoe fits perfectly (size 8) and feels very comfortable and cushioned on the bottom. Sole is sticky and has good traction on skree and downhill. Some other reviews complained about the zipper, I really like it. I have normal sized calves/ankles and they work perfectly. I think it is a great idea to have a zipper! I can leave it open a bit if I want to. This is a higher boot and rubbing might be an issue for some--for me the zipper solves that problem, allowing more forward and back movement of my shin, less banging on the fibula, and less rubbing at the top than other high top boots. The felt on the lining on the top of the boot and tongue is soft and that contributes to the lack of rub for me. The laces are an odd color choice but hey, it is a small thing on an otherwise perfect fitting boot. Do be aware that these boots are a true grey color with a yellow sueded accent. The photo makes them look more taupe or griege. I have not taken these out on a long hike yet, with winter coming I should be able to check waterproof claims.
