After taking it out on a rainy day for rowing class, noticed it is experiencing delamination. This is a concern specific to this jacket/outdoor research products I've seen voiced across the web- reviews at REI, reviews on reddit, etc. Disappointing, as this was an investment jacket. The main activity I use this for is skiing: works great as a shell because it's lightweight and you can zipper down the sides when you get warm. HOWEVER, this jacket DOES NOT hold up to downpours or even light rain. If you need a jacket to quickly run outside and do something for less than 20 minutes, this jacket is fine. But if you are backpacking or need to be outside for some time and it's raining or snowing, this jacket will soak through. I have even waterproofed it recently and still no luck (that might be saying more to the waterproofing product as well). Experienced some heavy rainfalls and winds in this and never got wet. Washed it with nickwax whenever it got dirty and still looks brand new. Absolutely love it, my favourite piece of outdoor gear. My original Aspire jacket had a seam failure after 8 years and I was sent this jacket as a replacement. The original jacket was GoreTex, soft and comfortable. This one is not GoreTex, it is stiff and does not breathe. Really disappointing. Five stars for Customer Service, but please bring back the GoreTex version. My husband even proposed after summiting our hike in the pouring rain, us both wearing our aspire jackets! After a couple years, I had holes in both pockets and it wet out, so I contacted the company and they sent a brand new coat. No questions asked. I’ve had that coat since, and now there is a hole in the pocket again, even though I was careful not to put keys in the pocket this time. once again they sent a brand new coat no questions asked and a beanie to go with it! The weather for the trip was more or less misty/foggy with some moderate rain at times and the temperatures were low 50's. The jacket, layered with a puffy jacket, was very comfortable and kept me dry. There is a previous review where a person stated the jacket \"pockmarked\" when it got wet. Yes this jacket did that too BUT the \"pockmarks\" did not stay as it rained and they also disappeared when the jacket dried. We did several hikes with the jacket on with just a t-shirt underneath and got a tad warm but cooled down fairly quickly upon opening the pit zips. I appreciate the ability to unzip the sides of the jacket for this purpose but also unzip the jacket from the bottom sides as well, should I need to access pockets and what have you. Now the not so good....During our trip I wore a small Camelbak Pak for carrying small things like gloves, hat, etc and I noticed that the pack has actually chaffed the jacket and caused some unsightly pilling and this is in just the first week of owning the jacket. Now I don't expect to have to wear this jacket every time I hike, but I do worry that over time, wearing a pack with this jacket will eventually wear holes in the material. I guess I expected better quality in this aspect. (Excuse the color variation in the photos as this is from the camera and lighting) Hopefully OR can come up with some type of fix for their materials in the future. It’s really kept the water out during the rainy PNW spring, the material is super durable but not crazy heavy, and the side zippers for making the jacket breathable is a great touch.
