Whether you’re about to play golf for the first time or your golf wardrobe just desperately needs a refresh, choosing the proper golf attire can be intimidating. Wearing sophisticated silhouettes and performance fabrics on the golf course is key to meeting dress code standards without sacrificing mobility— but don’t worry, our experts are here to help you learn what to wear golfing so you can stay comfortable and confident for 18 holes and beyond.

Proper Golf Attire for Men

Men's Golf Tops

If you have ever watched a pro golf tournament or tagged along for a few rounds, you probably have noticed that a collared shirt, tucked into your pants or shorts, is standard golf attire for most men. Classic men’s golf shirts include short- and long-sleeved golf polos, but recently brands have also begun offering modern fits like mockneck golf shirts and golf shirts with blade collars. If you’re expecting cool or variable weather, we also recommend taking along an athletic quarter-zip or jacket to layer over your collared shirt.

Men’s Golf Bottoms

The standard in golf pants for men is a pair of fitted slacks with a belt. Most golfers prefer slacks made with athletic, flexible fabrics to prevent any restriction while swinging. More traditional golfers may prefer a “dressy” slack that’s less fitted. No matter the style of pants you choose, it's generally safe to wear a neutral-colored slack made with a polyester blend or cotton. Stay away from jeans or denim fabrics as many golf courses will not allow this in their dress code (Besides, golfing in jeans can be very uncomfortable.). For warmer days, dress shorts are often worn with a belt and tucked-in shirt. A good rule of thumb is to ensure your golf shorts hit just above the knee or lower.

Proper Golf Attire for Women

Women’s Golf Tops

Women have a bit more flexibility when it comes to choosing their golf outfit. Like men, they can choose to wear a more traditional golf polo or collared shirt, or they can opt for an athletic shirt or tank top. Non-collared, collared, and mockneck tops are generally all considered appropriate golf attire for women. It is best to avoid casual tops like t-shirts and crop tops or thin-strapped tank tops. Women’s golf tops can be worn tucked or untucked.

Women’s Golf Bottoms & Dresses

When choosing what bottoms to wear golfing, women can go for golf pants, capris, shorts, skirts, or even dresses. Like men, athletic fabrics are preferred due to their flexibility and comfort. Women's golf shorts should hit mid-thigh or lower, but you can also choose a golf skirt or skort. Golf skorts are a great option as they provide more comfort and coverage, especially on hotter days. There are also a variety of golf dresses on the market that are great for playing golf in warm weather.

Golf Shoes & Accessories

While golf shoes are not essential for playing golf, they do provide excellent traction and comfort to meet the specific demands of the sport. If you don’t have a proper pair of golf shoes, clean athletic sneakers and sandals are considered appropriate golf footwear at most courses.

On sunny days, most golfers wear an athletic golf hat or visor to shield their eyes from the sun and keep their field of view clear. Many advanced golfers do not wear sunglasses as they can affect depth perception, but some more casual golfers choose to wear them.

Fabric & Features to Consider

As mentioned above, most golfers choose athletic fabrics made from blends of polyester or cotton. The sweat-wicking, quick-drying properties of polyester have made it the go-to fabric for top golf brands like Puma, Nike, adidas, and Under Armour. Here are a few good rules to follow:

  • Lightweight fabrics are best as you spend a lot of time in direct sunlight outdoors
  • Choosing fabrics with UPF or SPF properties is even better
  • It’s also important that your golf outfit provides you with complete mobility as it is essential your swing is not changed by your clothing

Once you’ve nailed down your preferred fabric, you can experiment with many different patterns and colors unless specifically restricted by your golf club.

For convenience, you may also want to consider what other features are important in your golf clothing. Many people find pockets an essential part of their golf attire as it makes it easier to carry tees, score cards, and even extra golf balls. Other features like clothing vents and layer-ability may be good to consider when the weather is warm or unpredictable.

Club Dress Codes

Our guide gives you a great baseline for how to dress for golf, however, every golf club has different standards and expectations. Some clubs encourage casual, athletic clothing while others may adhere to a much stricter dress code. Many golf courses also dictate what type of golf shoes are allowed.
