I have been a Maui Jim fan for many years. My usual pair are the Big Kahunas, but I wanted to try something out that was a little lighter and more stylish. I bought a pair of Dragons Teeth and they are very comfortable and light, and I like the mirror lenses. You can't go wrong with Maui Jim!
I've worn Maui Jims for years, but hadn't bought any for about the last 5. I love the lightweight, and the optics - already great on my old Voyagers, even better in these. I work as a yacht captain in the season, and having high quality sunglasses is a must on the water in any conditions.
I've read some reviews critical of the new folding cases, but I think they're an advance in themselves. Not carrying a backpack or anything else very often, the old clam shell case was too bulky, this one comes with me everywhere
Wow. Blown away by these shades. My 5th pair of Maui’s. Love these. Fit great and look great and I love the new case. Much better than the old. The zipper on the old cases would always break after years of use.
These glasses cause a weird bokeh effect whenever you're facing in the general direction of the sun. I bought the blue mirror finish, which caused little blue bokeh "sparkles" to show up in my field of vision. Considering it gets in the way of whatever I'm trying to look at, I'll have to return these glasses. Maybe this isn't a problem with the neutral gray finish, but I'm not going to bother buying them to test that. A shame since I like the look and weight of these glasses.
Additionally, when the sun is hitting your face from the side, it's easy to see the reflection of your own eye in the lens. I suppose that's not entirely avoidable with this style of sunglasses, but I still would've expected them to be less reflective than my $20 sunglasses.
This review is for the My Maui product, not the glasses as they come. I ordered the My Maui navy frame with natural grey lenses once they became available. One thing I missed in the description is that the My Maui glasses would have polycarbonate lenses and not the Super Thin Glass as the regular glasses come with. I wondered why this would be the case since they make the glasses with the natural grey but I guess it just does not work like that. When the glasses arrived one of the lenses was not seated in the frame properly and would not fit. Also, the weight to the glasses was way off from everything I had held in person (the lenses were too light). I have worn Maui Jim sunglasses for the past 13 years but what I received felt like a pair of Foakleys. I promptly returned the glasses and ordered the navy stripe frames as they come. Will review those when I receive them.
I finally received my new "MyMaui" version of the Dragon's Teeth Sunglasses today. I got Hawaii Lava with readers lenses and the Brown Stripe Carbon Fiber Frame. They are everything I have come to expect from Maui Jim, which is nothing short of excellence. When I ordered them, Customer Service called me the next day and said they were on backorder and gave me the option to choose another pair or wait. I have several MJ sunglasses and chose to wait. Excellent Customer Service and excellent products have had me replace 3 pairs this year and I purchased a pair of MJ Optical Glasses which I'm extremely satisfied with as well.
Bought online and it said they would be delivered ~5 days later. When I didn't receive any kind of shipping notice, I contacted support, only to be told they're backordered and won't be delivered for weeks. Just an FYI. Maui Jim needs to be better about this. I'll update whenever I finally receive the sunglasses.
The best! This is the 10th pair of Maui’s that I own (self admitted addict) and are the best I’ve ever owned. The combination of carbon fibre, spring hinged, and flexible arms make these the lightest and most comfortable MJ frames I have ever tried on. The optics of the Hawaii blue are stunning- absolutely world class. Back all of this with the famous customer service MJ are known for and you can’t go wrong. Only gripe: the sunglass case and cleaning cloth- why MJ?!
This is my fifth pair of MJ's and by far my favorite. The dark navy on blue color combo is freakin' incredible, the fit is perfect, and the weight is super low despite the glass lenses. Couldn't ask for a better combination of lens clarity, weight, color, style, and fit in a pair of sunglasses. Highly recommend.
I've been wearing Maui Jim Stingrays for over a decade now and love them. I wear them every day, in all conditions. I recently damaged my most recent pair and needed a new pair quick as the weather has been fantastic here in the Pacific Northwest. Upon going to the Maui Jim website, I quickly determined that some of the new styles really appealed to me, so I ordered pair of Dragon's Teeth. I'm partial to carbon fibre whenever possible and these glasses really feel terrific on my face. They are extremely lightweight and the lens clarity is fantastic as well. The lenses don't seem to block as much light as my Stingrays, but they're very nice. My only gripe(s) would be that they were shown to be 'in stock', so I ordered them. My credit card was run but I never received shipping info, etc. After a couple days, I reached out to Maui Jim only to be told that they were back-ordered. Well, the color I ordered showed that they were available. In fact, they were not. The other colors showed 'out of stock', hence me ordering the color I did. Upon getting this info from customer service, I strongly suggested that they update their website to reflect true availability. They did not. I cancelled my order. I had to go for quite a while without sunglasses because of their discrepancies, which I didn't appreciate. Later, I ordered them again and I did receive them in a timely fashion, just as I'd always experienced in the past. In a (coco)nut shell, I was disappointed with what i had hoped to be a quick purchase, but got what I wanted/needed after all. Lastly, I can reverberate what others have mentioned about the protective case that was included with my glasses. The clam shell style I've grown accustomed to would have been much more protective and fitting considering the price. All said; I'll probably be ordering another pair in a different color soon...
Great versatile pair of sunglasses-- carbon fiber is a winner
This is a pretty slick pair of rectangular / classic frame sunglasses with a slightly sporty look.
This is one of the lightest pairs of MJ sunglasses you'll find with the SuperThin Glass lenses (which I highly prefer due to their scratch resistance and clarity). In fact in terms of weight, this is on par with models that use plastic MauiPure or MauiBrilliant models. This is due to the carbon fiber frame which weighs basically nothing. However, the frames are still very sturdy and the carbon fiber material is considerably stronger and stiffer than traditional nylon.
This is my 3rd pair of MJs and I bought these to complement my other 2 metal framed aviator style sunnies. The dragon's teeth is a pretty versatile frame for several reasons:
-Has a classic shape that pairs well with casual clothing, but also somewhat sporty looking. -Very thin and lightweight due to the carbon fiber-- allows you to use these glasses in more active scenarios that other glass lens models would not be ideal for. -SuperThin Glass lenses, always a plus in my book. -Adjustable rubber coated temple tips-- this is a huge feature that allows the eartips to custom fit around your ear and head. This allows the Dragons Teeth to fit super securely on your face despite it technically not being a sport/wrap/fishing model. -Spring hinges also a big bonus in terms of fit and longevity.
The frame does make creaking/clicking sounds when you flex the spring hinges all the way, but this tends to go away over time. I've seen this occur with a number of MJ frames so it's probably just a new frame thing.
Be upfront with customers on what they will receive
I was excited to get these glasses but didn’t receive them because they were out of stock. I ordered them and a different pair for my wife for an upcoming vacation, however we only received her pair. I asked customer service why the emailed invoice included both pairs but I received only one, and was told the other pair was on back order. Please update your system so customers can know if an item is on back order.
Very disappointed. Two weeks after ordering I reached out to inquire about expected delivery and only then find out that Dragon’s Teeth are on back order until November. MJ used to have excellent customer service and communication.
My Brown Stripe/Maui HT lens Dragon's Teeth sunglasses showed up at the door way earlier than anticipated and I welcomed them in to MJ collection (purchashed my 1st pair of MJ's in 1982) They look great and are extremely light weight (I love the carbon fiber material)
I just received my new Dragons Teeth sunglasses with the Brown Stripe Carbon Fiber Frame and the Neutral Grey Lens. I have had MANY Maui Jim sunglasses over the years and these are by far the best. Incredibly lightweight with the super thin glass lens and carbon fiber frame. Just amazing. I put them on and could believe the color and clarity. My other Maui Jims were also great but how lightweight these are is amazing. Highly recommend the custom sunglasses. Beach family our whole life and looking through these are incredible.
MJ hit a home run in with these! I’ve purchased and tried on many pairs including MJs and these are easily the best glasses I’ve ever tried on. I bought the Hawaii blue lens which looks awesome. At 58-18, I thought they would be a little big but the fit is perfect matched with high quality carbon frame which feels very light but stays in place. Also the spring hinged temples are a very nice feature. Quality is second to none. You will not be disappointed with these!!
Love my Dragon's Teeth so much that I bought a second pair. My first was the Navy striped with blue mirrored lens, my second was the brown striped with the bronze lens. Great for the bright sun in Florida. They fit my face good, which is on the smaller side. One complaint, not too happy with the new cases and lens cloth, the old cases and combination lens cloth/bag were so much better! Maui Jim, you should consider changing back.
Lightweight. Didn’t expect it but, it’s grown on me. Didn’t like the trifold case at first but, I needed to shove the case in my pocket and realized the genius of the collapsible case. Lenses are great . Only concern is the frames don’t seem to rugged or tough. Only time will tell how they hold up.
I bought the grey stripe with grey lens and put readers in them. Incredibly light and strong frame and have great optics as expected. Use them for fishing and readers help immensely tying knots. Definitely worth the money
I bought the brown stripe with HCL bronze lenses. I currently have 3 others pairs of Maui Jim for different purposes. These are excellent and I believe a good value. Very light and comfortable. The glass lenses give great clarity and aren't too dark for general wear. I also like the new style, folding case they come with. A lot handier to store when wearing the glasses.
Love these sunglasses; light weight and great blue mirror lenses; especially love the spring hinge temple pieces; a step up from my other pair which are over 15 years old. Like the folding case that I can carry in my shirt pocket.
I am a loyal customer after my first pair of Maui Jim’s about 15 years ago. Between my wife and I we own 7 different styles with various lenses. I recently purchased the Dragon’s Teeth and we are now fighting over who gets to wear them. The look, the weight and feel are fantastic. As the description said, Carbon Fiber makes for the perfect frame. The icing on the cake is how you can adjust the arms around the ears for comfort and fit. Maui Jim nailed it with these glasses.
This is my third pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. I have a light sensitivity and require sunglasses all the time. I used to be an exclusive Oakley guy until I was introduced to Maui Jim lenses. The color and clarity is the best in the business. I will never go back after owning my MJ’s.
