The spring allows quick installation of the mantle so you don't need to fiddle with tying knots and then snipping off the extra length of string. However, in my case, the spring clip of one of the two mantles I did install does not completely encircle the mount, and as a result is partly off. Since these are spring steel I don't believe it could have been bent out of shape during installation given the ease of installation, so probably a defect in production. Still works however, but very likely to fall off entirely if the lantern is jostled or bumped.
