Smith & Wesson revolvers have always been my favorites. The 642 is no different.\nBeing a Performance Center revolver, it does NOT have the internal lock. It has been worked on at the factory to improve the trigger pull over a standard Model 642. Seeing that this revolver has custom wood grips that look great and will give you good control while shooting.\nI have a J frame .357 Magnum model. While it is heavier than the 642, recoil with Magnum rounds can be “intense”. I wanted a J frame in .38 Special but rated for the +P ammunition.\nMy revolver came with the rubber “boot grips” that don’t have room for the little finger on the grip. I purchased wooden grips, very similar to the ones on this revolver.\nWhen beginning shooting, start with standard pressure .38 Special loads. Scheels has plenty of choices. That’s what I did.\nI then shot several cylinders full of Federal Punch +P .38 Special. While much less intense than .357 rounds, the +P ammunition is “snappy”. This is an aluminum framed revolver with stainless steel barrel and cylinder. Be aware that the higher pressure +P ammo will have more recoil but will be the best choice for personal defense.\nLastly, you might consider some recoil absorbing grips like Uncle Mike’s or Hogue grips. They won’t look as nice but will help control the revolver. Make sure that you get some that allow the use of the little finger while holding the grip.\nI would purchase the 642 again. Just remember what it’s designed for, short range.
