I live in a mountainous, hilly area and have never used trekking poles before until I recently signed up to run/hike an event next year where they might come in handy. \n\nAfter some research, I bought a pair of the Black Diamond Distance FLZ Trekking/Running Poles. I've used them a few times already and I am quite pleased. Being new to the concept, they were easy to use right out of the box. They expand and break-down easily and are quite compatible with my hydro pack. They seem to be solid so far as I trek up any hills I encounter, which usually consist of dirt, sand, and a lot of rocks. They are a great help as I climb, taking a lot of stress off my legs. I look forward to testing them out on some steeper declines. \n\nI'm still working on how to best stow and retrieve them from my pack while I am hiking/running (learning curve). I have already recommended this brand/product to a co-worker who will be running the event with me. Nothing crazy (16km, +4200 ft), but some decently technical terrain at parts. The poles were great until I needed to fold them and the small spring loaded tab in the upper part collapsed on both poles at the same time. One was lost and one I was stuck and will not spring back making the poles unusable.\nThis spare part is not available according to the BD European customer support. After some research I found this problem to be common and that no solution is provided by Black Diamond. Given the poles are definitely in the upper price range I believe the FLZs gives you a very high cost per mile and I do not recommend them. If this issue could be solved I'd say they are great, very comfortable and strong. I was offered to buy another pair of the same pole at 30% discount but as I see it I have to spend lots of my money to solve Black Diamonds own problem. Not ok. I like them so much I'm giving them one more chance. These are my third set in 4 years. I broke the first one arresting a slide down a steep slope with a full pack. The second pair broke spontaneously. The button you push to collapse the poles broke on both poles! I have read that this is a weak point. I didn't have a receipt but BD stepped up and gave me a discount for my next pair. They are light weight, well balanced, and feel good in the hand, but they are not reliable. \n\nIf you buy them you should remove the snow cage wings and epoxy the tip assembly to the pole. When in use the wings catch on everything they can and yank on your arm which pulls on the tip assembly. The tip assembly wedges back and forth and eventually cuts the internal cord that keeps the tip assembly connected to the rest of the hiking pole. The next thing you know you have a hiking pole falling apart in your hand with no tip on it. Good luck finding it. I am able to pack it in my backpack and out of the way while doing multipitch climbs. I like how easy it is to collapse and extend.
