Period. Full Stop.\nSome people just don't understand 22lr pistols, because they don't understand 22lr. \nFirst, you have to know that there is CHEAP ammo, and I am not talking about price. The quality of 22 varies from a \"gamble\" to extremely reliable. Many gravitate to 22's because the ammo cost much less than pistol centerfire. Some benchrest 22 can cost as much or more than centerfire pistol ammo. When you depend on the pistol to cycle rounds in semi-auto, and you use poor quality ammo, it is common for these guns to seem unreliable. Combined with low power to cycle the slide, \"dirty\" ammo the requires more frequent cleaning and maintenance, and potentially poor grip, these guns receive undo complaints. \n\nThere are guns that are designed for target shooting and competition. They look nothing like a traditional semi-auto pistol. The slides are designed to function \"reliably\" with low powered 22 ammo. It is a purpose built pistol that can be modified with aftermarket parts, and exceed over $1,000. Quite frankly, it is not fair to compare these semi-auto style pistols to target/competition pistols. \n\nSpend some time on the Tube and watch reviews on the FN 502. Most reviewers, if they have adequate experience and knowledge, will rate this as one of the best in this category. Simply put, it is extremely reliable. Keep in mind that if you use cheap ammo, you can get poor results. Using good ammo with a velocity of 1,200 fps will help 22's cycle reliably. I have used Winchester M22 in this gun without failure. I have used the same ammo in a Walther P22 with poor results, even after the slide was replaced by Walther. Using CCI Mini Mag has been 100% reliable, in the FN 502, while experiencing failures with the P22. My point, using a low to mid-range ammo like the M22 in the FN 502 with excellent results demonstrates to me, and many others, the quality of this pistol. Sig P22 and Glock's 22 version use plastic parts where the FN 502 uses metal. The guy next to me at the range was using his new Sig P22 with multiple failures. I shot over 100 rounds with my FN 502 with 1 failure. Multiple strikes on that Win M22 proves it was the ammo, not the gun. Again, if you want one of the most reliable 22 semi-auto style pistols, the 502 is that.\n\nI can't believe that someone would ding this gun because it is made for FN by UMAREX Gmbh. Many gun makers partner with Umarex to make their 22's, because it is a special process to develop and manufacture in this caliber. This is done under the direction of the gun mfg. The Walther P22 is built by Umarex, and is not a reliable gun. Some of the parts are \"economized\". The extractor is too thin, allowing slop and fails to extract the case. A thicker extractor is available aftermarket, and makes it more reliable, but Walther chose not to include this. As all of these Umarex 22's made under license, the Manufacture determines the quality of the parts. Umarex does not spec these guns, and not all are built to the same quality. FN 502 is at the top of the list. If you want to be picky and tinker with this pistol, you can change or upgrade parts, but it is not necessary! \n\nAs many have said, the trigger is very good. It is hammer fired as many will prefer. It does allow for a double strike without racking. I think they are all Optics ready, but verify if this is important. The pistol does come with various types of plates so you can use several types of red dots. \n\nIn short, this is a quality gun and many will say the most reliable. The draw to this type is that it is truly a trainer in that it has a common barrel length and the frame is the same as a full size gun. Shooting this pistol will help develop skills used on pistols of larger calibers. Your grip, sight acquisition, and trigger pull can be honed and applied while shooting ammo at a fraction of the cost. It is a good choice to put in the hands of new shooters. When you have a gun that jams or fails to feed, new shooters become frustrated quickly.\n\nI bought the Walther on a whim. I have shot competitors' Browning, Ruger and S&W target pistols, experiencing the spread in quality and price. The FN502 looks great, feels great in your palm, and shoots great. However, there are things to be aware of: \n(1) the FN502 is a \"replica\" made by UMAREX Gmbh, Germany, and NOT manufactured by FN/Herstal. (2) the FN502 has several cheaply made components: \n (a) the front sight is plastic and fell out after 25 rounds. \n (b) the slide is made from Zinc Alloy (illegal in Minnesota) \n(3) the FN502 had a problem cycling copper rounds high-velocity. The power of these rounds will force the slide will remain open after firing, and not advance the next round into battery (happened about 50%). \n(4) the position of the hammer is confusing, full-cock, half-cock, and quarter cock and it will drop when the trigger is pulled (not actually tested to see if it would strike hard enough to fire a round). \n\nThe good part is that it shot great if you have a red-dot; which by the way the plate came loose after about 100 rounds. The FN502 did just fine on the Norma TAC-22 (40gr lead standard velocity) with about a 5% failure rate. \n\nThis gun in appearance, and the FN brand have a lot going for it, but at the price of $499 was a little disappointing considering the actual quality of the product. It did feel like I was handling a UMUREX .177 CO2 pistol. Scheels has been just a great support, can't say enough about the professionalism of their staff, and their helpfulness in the matter. They offered a trade-in which gave me enough money to purchase the Sig Sauer 322, ammo, and a Holosun red dot (+_$100 paid). \n\nScheels, kudos to their team of consultants.
