I bought a new Ulterra last spring and it locked up after 3 days in Canada. Scheels refunded my money and I purchased a Garmin Kraken. Installation is a pain! This is NOT at all similar to a Minnkota. For starters, the power cable is huge and uses a parallel wiring system (2 pos and 2 neg in parallel). Good luck finding a good connector to terminate directly to their power cable. You need to go to a terminal block and then go to a connector. While the mounting holes are identical to the Minnkota, the design of the unit is different. The side covers on the Kraken curve down, which prevents this from working with slide mounting units. For $3800, this unit does not come with a foot controller or power plug. On the plus side, once you get it mounted and powered up, it is awesome compared to the Minnkota!!!! MUCH SMOOTHER! MUCH QUIETER!! Power is unbelievable. At 24V, I had my boat moving at 4mph. Autopilot seems much better than Minnkota. Spot lock got on the spot much quicker. Gesture control was nice once you got used to it. The motor can make micro adjustments in steering or rapid changes, I loved that feature. Hooking up to the Garmin depth finder/chart was simple. The wiring from the motor head to the base is nicer, not hanging down. I hope to have durability with this unit, it seems to be a much better unit. Garmin needs to come up with a good installation package - come on Garmin, you’re better than this.
