Chose this tent as the smallest/lightest when packed for my budget. Should pack easily on the motorcycle, and double as hiking gear if I want to go that route. (LIke what I did there?) It arrived last night, and I had it completely set up, staked, with rain fly in about 10 min. And that was taking the time to adjust the seams and tweak my staking. I left it set up in my back yard, and this evening we had a nice pop up T-storm. Which, if you know anything about West Texas, this was not a sprinkle. Easily saw .5 inches of rain in less than an hour (according to my novelty rain gauge). I kept an eye on the tent through the window. The wind shook it pretty good, the rain and hail came down. Lots of thunder and lightning, even a tornado warning in the next county. More drama than CBS. After the storm passed, I popped out to check the tent. Bone dry inside. I reckon I picked the right tent for my needs. Next test: Actually sleeping in it. . .
I love it! It has NEVER let me down. Freezing temps and monsoon rains...I'm warm and dry. I do suggest using a footprint or something for moisture. I use an emergency blanket inside and underneath. Everything stays dry that way. The only reason Im getting a new tent is because I want to drop some weight. Going with the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2. Its a full 2 pounds lighter but also $250 more. I hope it takes care of me as well as my Kelty does. KEEPING THE KELTY!
I couldn't say anything bad about my tent at all. I've had it in wind and rain and never got wet at all. The floor bottom gets a little bit damp but not soaked. The only thing I could say is I wish it was a double vestibule double door. Sometimes to put my head at the wide end of the tent I have to turn the door towards a wall on a mountain or something.
I came across this specific tent in an old Backpacker Magazine (very well rated and very affordable!). I decided to give it a-go due to it's price point and by god - this is a great tent! It's not only affordable, it's SUPER quick to assemble / disassemble and kept myself and my backpacking partner warm on a chilly night. For a first time camper / backpacker, I couldn't be more pleased with this tent.
Easy set up, light and perfect for New England summer camping and also it will get a work out this fall in the White Mountains of NH. So far it’s everything that Kelty promised and that’s why it’s my third Kelty tent 👍
The item is acceptable. What is not is the inability to contact me in regards to a follow-up question I had regarding payment for this product. I submitted an on-line ticket and did not have a response. I am a very disappointed customer.
Took it once to go camping, the tent is really easy to set up and a big bonus is it’s pleasing to the eye. It’s very cozy for two people. I’m 6 ft and have a little bit of wiggle room on both ends which is nice.
This tent was the easiest tent I have ever pitched. All of the Nobendeum stakes came back out perfectly straight! The tent had good air circulation and no condensation in the morning. Easy for a very old man to get in and out. Next test will be in a few thunderstorms.
I bought this 2 person tent for backpacking in Utah’s High Unitas. I haven’t used this tent in the field yet but have set it up a few times at home to practice packing and unpacking it. Easy to unpack and very quick to assemble. It compresses very well when folded and rolled neatly. The tent is very well made with reinforced fabric and stitching at all the stress points. I bought a slightly smaller compression stuff sack than the the one that came with it so I can fasten the tent to the lower back of my pack. The two person size seems big enough for me and my gear but would be tight for two people and their gear but not impossible to pull off (if you got along very well 😏). Only wish Kelty had the ground cloth that fits the tent in stock.
This tent has high quality construction while maintaining a light weight, making it perfect for backpacking. The tent goes up extremely fast and packs down nicely. I chose to use an aftermarket stuff sack which got the total size of the tent down to a really small size. I would highly recommend this tent. I tend to research items to death before I purchase them and my choice on this tent was perfect.
With the dew we wended up getting a little wet inside but not too bad. The seals seem solid and the poles are awesome. Some of the joints I didn’t even have to touch, popped together very easy. I would rate 5 but for the price I would expect lighter weight and more durability.
I love kelty products. I purchased the Late start 1 for my overnight backpacking trip in Joshua Tree this winter and it was a perfect tent for me, then I bought the 2 person for me and my wife and it lived up to the previous reviews. Great tent, easy to set up and the weight to cost to quality ratio is the best on the market. Would definitely recommend these series of tents for car camper and weekend backpacker alike. Good Job Kelty!
This is the best tent I have owned so far. Great price, Great Quality & Easy Set Up!
I have been a fan of Kelty tents since my first backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon. Our outfitter provided us with Kelty tents (Salida 1) for our trip and I was hooked. I came back home and bought a Salida 1 and it has been my main backpacking tent for solo trips. I realized I needed a 2 person tent when I decided to take my dog on trips with me. I took a chance on the Late Start 2. I loved the Salida 1, but the Late Start 2 is definitely my favorite tent. It isn't the lightest, but it is incredibly easy to put up and spacious. I really like the 2 side pockets inside the tent for storage. This is a perfect tent for a camping/backpacking beginner. They actually color code the tent, rain fly, and footprint for you which makes it easier for setting up. I have always been impressed with Kelty quality and this truly lives up to it.
The Late Start has plenty of room and with the simple 2-pole design is very easy to set up. The material is strong and the mesh provides ample ventilation on warm nights. Poles are aluminum and high quality. Even though there is only one door (compared to the two zipper doors on the NightOwl) and it's just slightly smaller, I still think this is the better tent to buy as it's lighter, easier to set up and more compact when rolled. It will keep you warm on cool nights and dry on rainy nights, as well as cool on hot nights.
Our troop used this for overnight camping recently. The boy who borrowed it from the equipment room was impressed with its lighter overall weight than the TN2 he normally takes, with the same features. Pole pockets are easier to set up by yourself than other pole connection methods.. The troop will be raising funds for purchase of several more of these..
Took my new "Late Start 2" for a trip deep in the Rockies in late fall..setup and breaking down was super fast and easy and no problem doing it alone...it took strong winds no problem and kept us warm all night..it fits 2 people but you won't have any extra space-great for backpacking since super light and packs small, for car camping when weight beeing not a factor, go bigger..unfortunetly one line snapped off right at the stitching, when someone fell over it... over all a great tent for the minimalist backpacker that looks for a solid shelter rather than a spacious base camp...
Great tent. Easy to pitch, durable material and reasonable room. My only qualm is the sleeve that you have to pass through for the tent poles. You guys have it right with the salida and trail ridge 2. Makes setup easier. Hope you guys consider a little change!
Camped out in the desert for the first time with this tent - I was surprised that the tent held up with 20-30 mph winds. However, the design of the fly made it quite loud and not sure if the tent would do the best in the rain. Pretty good tent overall, with a great packed size and nice stakes too.
Setup was quick as indicated and product appears as sold. Have not used it in country yet but testing it next month in no-see-um territory Everglades National Park. Purchased for size (gonna set it up in my Hells Bay cockpit) and no-see-um mesh screen so will follow up after trip.
Bought this for a camping trip to Switzerland and chose it because it fit ina carry-on size roller that I was going to be toting around Europe during different parts of the trip. It was super easy to set up. Great size for a couple or single person but def not two adult friends.
This tent folds down into a very small bag and is super lightweight. The tent basically puts itself up! With 2 people you can have it out of the bag and completely assembled within 2-3 minutes. We also purchased 2 of the Kelty Galactic Sleeping Pads (also awesome by the way) and they fit nice and snug into the floor area. No complaints here!
Used it 5 days in a row on a back country float trip. The set up and take down was very nice and easy. Got dumped on a couple times on the trip and the rain fly held water out much better than I expected it to. Great set up and easy to pack around
The late start lives up to its name. Easy and quick to set up, while still packing better than an “instant” tent. The formed tents poles make the footprint feel bigger than comparable tents. I do wish it included a footprint, but I guess footprints as a standard was a thing of the 1990’s.
My experience with my new Kelty Late Start 2 tent was supreme. I went on a motorcycle camping trip and the tent packed up well on my motorcycle. The tent was a breeze to set up and it suited me well. I’m looking forward to more trips with my Kelty Late Start 2.
Finally got to take this great little tent out. Super easy set up, my daughter was able to set up by herself in a little less than 10 mins. Was actually surprised how roomy it was inside. Sleeping was a little challenging (you are very close), as my daughter is very restless. Love how far down the rain fly goes. We had severe thunderstorms our second night and we were the only ones that woke up dry!
This tent has stuck with a design that has worked for many years, the free standing two pole system. And pockets to shove the ends of the poles in while you're setting it up. Most the time the simple, pure design like this tent works the best. Gives you time to think about the woods more.
Carried this tent on a 60-mile hike this past week, and it was quicker and easier to set up than my old tent. I can't comment on wet weather performance, since I didn't even use the rainfly (therefore only 4 stars for now).
