He is newer to riding a bike but not new. He had zero problems on his first ride shifting gears although I advised him to just get used to the hand brakes. He is slightly tall for 6 and he is almost 7 and he has little trouble on this bike. It is slightly too tall with the seat all the way down to the point that between being new and his height he sometimes gets off balance and lays it over. Otherwise it shifts and brakes like a bike for under $200. He absolutely loves it and he can go much further than his smaller 16\" single speed bike. I compared bikes at Erik's and our local S&S here in Sioux falls.
