Question? Why did MJ discontinue the Tortoise frames with rose lenses? This has been my go to for years. I have purchased many pairs of them and I'm at a loss now. I just purchased a New Pair a few weeks ago of the Black frames with the rose lenses but its not the same lenses color.
Awesome. I am Asian and have a small face, and these have a small vertical lens span. They are comfortable and awesome in the custom blue lens. I've been looking for sunglasses like these for years and finally found them. Great for cycling and running but also for every day.
I purchased these glasses almost 10 years ago when they were fairly new to the market. These were my daily sunglasses for over 5 years. I did everything I shouldn't have with them. I swam, I left them in my hot car, I dropped them (over and over and over again), I used windex to clean them (oops) and I even sat on them once. Yes, they got a bit scratched and dinged from the drops from the top of my hat when I forgot they were on my hat and subsequently fell on to concrete (multiple times), but they never cracked and were still completely wearable. After so many years I sent these and a pair of even older MJs back for servicing. Got them back looking BRAND NEW. I am super thrilled. What an amazing deal.
All that said, I am specifically writing this review because after all of the abuse my sunglasses have endured they never cracked and the lenses never came out of the frames. I am not sure how this could of happened to people who posted there one star reviews. Maybe they have fakes or something really bad happened to them (stepped on or fell on), but in either event, after literally 5+ years of mistreatment, my glasses were still in tact, wearable and great. And like i said, after $75 service they are now like new. Buy MJs. They are 100% worth it!!!!
I have had these sunglasses for 5-6 years now. They are still as awesome today as they were when I bought them. I have 2 pairs - one I leave in my car (the brown pair) and the other (the gray pair) I keep with me for my day-to-day. These sunglasses are fantastic, they are light-weight, wear well, and provide great protection from the sun. I hate to drive in the sun without them! It is amazing they have lasted this long since I went through the cheap $20 pairs every few months between scratches and broken arms! The investment into a solid pair of MJs has been worth every penny!!
These are the absolute best sunglasses for someone like me. They are a bit fragile because they are so light-weight. I get headaches from heavier sunglasses. These feel like I'm not wearing glasses at all. The Rose hue makes my whole "look" on life better. It's that "everything is beautiful" site you love!
I purchased two pair in the last 18 months. The lenses cracked on both pair while cleaning (gently) within 8 months. It’s a shame because I love the fit and style. Obviously, Maui Jim knows this in an issue. Hard to believe such a well known company does nothing about it.
Cons: The design is too fragile and they break after about 6 months in the exact same place — where the lens screws into the nose bridge. To get the temples around your head, you have to flex them outward slightly, and this strains the location noted. In time, after repeated flexures, it breaks. Not happy about this on a $200 pair of glasses. Lenses are good but not great.
Great replacement for the pair that was no longer available for parts. Love the recommendation from Nia and her personal communication. I am a life long fan of Maui Jim after the first pair we bought in Waikiki.
My wife lost her last pair and could not find them so I bought these for christmas to replace them day after they arrive we found her old pair they are still in good nick so i show'd her the new pair do you think I'm getting them back thanks see loves them
these glasses are amazing at blocking sun and glare while driving in bright sunny summer or in winter white glare times. The frame is super comfortable and sits on top of my head without falling great for my job.
Despite taking great care to take these Makah sunglasses off with both hands to avoid torque on the highly fragile bridge pin connection to the lens...they're just too fragile for practical use! While Maui has been very good about repairing these glasses each time they break at the bridge, for a fee, it's poorly designed. I have had this repaired twice in four years. I will look for another MJ reader, and happy to see that MJ now offers more readers.
I love the Maui Rose lens and the lightweight design for activities, however they are extremely fragile! (And I’m very gentle with them) This is the second time they have broken by literally just putting them on! Once it was cold outside, and I thought it may have been the extreme temperature. But most recently, I was just putting them on my face and the lens broke. And I can see that the other lens is cracked in the same place (near the nose, where the screw is). The repair cost is too pricey, especially considering the initial cost of the glasses, and I may just move on to a different brand.
Awesome style but.way to fragile. Same as a lot of reviews. Lenses break at the screw by the nose bridge piece. First repair I dropped them. My fault paid for new lenses and was told the lense (left) had a crack. Less then 2 years later, cleaning lense and it came out in my hand. Sent it and Maui took care of it. A few years later same this again. "Stress cracks". My glasses when not on are stored in the case. Never in my pocket. I own another pair of not Maui Jims but similar frame style and they have not broken in 3 years. Beautiful style but Maui needs to reevaluate the build of these. I can't recommend this style frame but will gladly suggest a not frameless style from Maui as my wife has 2 prescription pairs and never had an issue with either.
I have been a fan of Maui Jim sunglasses for almost 20 yrs. In fact, I still have my first pair. I had my last pair (that I have had for 7 years) recently stolen. I loved those and went on the site and saw they still had the same pair!!! I’m loving them!!
I currently own 4 pairs of these glasses, and am buying a 5th. One pair is always in my backpack, one in my car, one in my wife's car, one in my photography/dive gear bag. I have been around the world many, many times with these, and absolutely love them! I do photography & diving around the world, which often means a lot of strong sun and glare, these glasses are great in the harshest light conditions, including out on open water. The wrap around design helps keep wind blow debris out of my eyes, as well as side glare. The frames and lens are very light weight, I wear them all day long and they don't feel "heavy". Only minor downside, they are not designed to be rough handled, these are not a pair to be thrown around. However, I handle them like I handle expensive cameras, firm but careful, and that's why after this many years I still have them and they're doing great. Thank you Maui Jim, love 'em!!!
My husband and I both have these, and they have stood up to thousands of miles of biking, hundreds of miles of hiking, and dozens of cross-country flights/drives. The trick is to handle them mainly at the temples rather than by the nose bridge. These are super lightweight and comfortable (and never move when they're on your face!), and the price you pay for that is a little extra caution. We always keep them in the case, and use two hands to pull them off the face. His just broke after three years (at the screw, like many others here), and he's already bought a new pair.
Like other reviewers point out, these are great looking glasses, but extremely fragile. I've owned two pair and both have broken in the exact same spot, where the screw secures the glasses to the nose bridge. Probably will look elsewhere for my next pair of glasses, which is a shame because I love the style and clarity of these glasses.
Over the last couple of years, I've bought 2 pair of these sunglasses. Like many reviewers, the lenses broke at the screw near the nose piece. I love these glasses. They are so light and fit my face better than most, but I can't spend this much to keep replacing sunglasses with an obvious flaw design. Please fix this issue!
I have had 3 pairs, great glasses, but they are weak at the holes holding the glass to the frame caused by stress cracking. I complained to Maui Jim, but they did not take any responsibility for, what I would consider a manufacturing flaw/design weakness. I will not buy a forth pair. Pity, because I really like the glasses
I have worn MJ for 20 years, many makes and models. If you just take care of them, they will never fail to take care of you and your eyes. I wear them out before they break. I will stay with MJ. Best lense in the biz. Period.
I love the feel and view through these fabulous shades! They are my 'go to' sunglasses for walking, hiking, biking, and anything outdoors. They fit perfectly, and eliminate glare from all sides. I sometimes forget I have them, they are SO comfortable.
I read a review on another site that said these were for narrow faces but they aren't. They are for wide faces. They look ok but you can definitely tell that they are too wide for my face. I really like the hard case that came with them. The sunglasses seem to be very high quality. I really wish they were a little smaller!
It's almost 10 years now, that I am wearing Maui jim sunglasses, I'm an optician with 15 years experience, since I am wearing maui, I can't wear any other brand of sunglasses, because of protection I get from Maui lenaes, its amazing, so my eyes are addicted to it.. Clear vision, comfortable, uv protection, polarization, anti glare. I love it... I have collection of Maui Jim sunglasses now
This is my fourth pair of Maui Jim sunglasses With the ever increasing use of LED headlights it is vital that we protect our eyes especially those with green or blue eyes that are more sensitive to light intensity I find myself averting my eyes with oncoming LED headlights because it’s almost painful These glasses take the glare away and ensure my eyes stay healthy. My mother had macular degeneration which is the loss of central vision we believe her mother did as well my eyes are green and I want to avoid that same disease Wear your sunglasses take your eye vitamins and share your experiences with these headlights with your eye doctors Perhaps we can lobby to have them changed back to traditional headlights for the sake of our vision Thank you for making a quality product protecting our vision. Style of the sunglasses are important with the wraparound feature People have commented that they are fragile just take the responsibility to pack them gently back in their case and you will have them for years. I have I would be happy to be in contact with anybody who would like to move forward with this cause Sleep tight.
Buying this pair to replace a pair that broke the way so many other folks reviewing reported. They break where the screws attach to the lens. There was a time when Maui would have replaced the obviously defective glasses due to the fact that the design is flawed. Those days are long gone. Now its buyer beware. If I had not purchased so many of them over the past decade it wouldn't bother me. They must be making enough profit not to care.
