I'm sure it was so the shoe's lip could sort- of flex out if you needed extra flexibility. But that never happens. \nAfter day one of wearing them my ankles were swollen and now day 2 I've taken scissors and cut the extra goretex or material that digs into my ankle. I suggest everyone do the same so you can continue loving these shoes. Foot bed in the shoe is great. Upper material is good to go and lasting really well. The tongue on shoe on only one side does dig into front of ankle. Had to readjust the strings to see if helped. It did not. The only complain to the shoe is where the tongue fold hot points into the front of ankle. Other than that. The shoe is really good. I have worn for a month and a half, five days a week and on my feet all day and moving heavy equipment.
