I purchased this to replace an older Filson beanie that my dog chewed. The older beanie had a tag that read “Filson 1897” was softer wool, had five seams, and was much larger. The tag on the new beanie only reads “Filson” and can barely squeeze over my head. What happened to the quality Filson used to be known for?
I bought this beanie in two colors. Kept me warm in the duck blind and very comfortable. I like the olive color, I bought the flame orange color for public deer hunting. Definitely recommend for the comfort and warmth.
When I ordered this beanie I was under the assumption it would have the same “Filson 1897” tag as pictured on the site. When I received the beanie it no longer has the “1897” tag. Although its a good wear, I’m somewhat disappointed because the tag is what helped seal the deal in placing the order. I was planning on ordering the red as well, but knowing that it won’t have the same tag depicted on the site, I will not be doing so.
This watch cap is not inexpensive but looks great. Upon first wearing it’s a bit tight but quickly loosens up nicely. The problem is that it won’t last you more than a single season as the weave falls apart, develops holes quickly. I’ve now purchased four of these over a three year period , all have fallen apart within a single season and I can no longer justify another purchase of these hats. It’s a real shame as they look good, fit great and has no stupidly large logo on it.
Very disappointed. On one hand the hat is warm and comfortable. But I find dark lint all over the back of the hat probably from wearing a navy blue hoody. I have no idea how to get it off without ruining the hat.
My head would be happily warm if it weren’t for my partner stealing it!
Beautiful, well made beanie. I have a small head and it is quite fitted; though my partner who is 6’2 and has a much larger head than me also manages to wear it and looks great in it… so take that with a grain of salt! The color is a beautiful muddy green in the best way. My mother might disagree but she also refers to my beloved ochres with distaste.
Love the cap but disappointed that the copper safety pin attached to the hat that holds the Filson tag caused a snag in the material made worse when I tried to fix it. I called Filson customer service and mentioned the issue.
Simple design with quality wool to keep your head warm.
A warm hat of solid wool and with a folded ban that provides two-layer protection for my ears. This is an uncomplicated design that provides the features that I have been seeking in a quality watch cap.
Very warm beanie - used it in the Eastern Sierras during hikes in altitude and to glaciers. Perfect warmth for such an environment. However, it is a bit snug for my head (and I thought I had a small head). Hoping it will stretch with use. I also have to be VERY careful when I put it away as wool snags easily. I've already got it stuck on zippers, backpack content and branches/shrubs :(
Great warmth and look. Not meant for those with big heads. I usually wear an l/xl flexfit, with some of those being a little tight. This beanie is tighter, leaves mark for those with big heads. I tried to stretch it a little to accommodate, and now some threads are coming apart at the top seams.
If you don't have a large head, it is probably a fantastic beanie.
Feel like I could have made this myself. It is somewhat warm but has a very loose weave and stretches out very quickly. Also, was searching for a warm beanie and thought a $50 knitted beanie would be it but this is only warm when your working. For trips to the car and from the car to your inside job, it’s maybe not the best thing ever. Would have liked an option for a fleece lined beanie with fold up lip.
I would say 4.5 on the beanie, I got two of them and have put some work on them in SE AK it’s always rainy windy and icy and they do well. It would be nice if they were a tighter weave so that they would block wind better. But my heads warm even when soaked so it does it’s job. Orange is muted
Needed a good wool beanie for the CO winter and this fits the bill. I’m a fan of wool for all the obvious reasons: warmth dry or wet, natural fibers, odor free, comfortable. I have a 7 3/8” head and this fits fine, plenty of stretch to it so I would think it would easily fit a larger/ smaller head no problem. I’ve worn it a week; pretty much all day twice and I don’t think it’s itchy; I think the wool,is soft and comfortable. I’d recommend this beanie. Made in USA so I feel good about supporting American workers and our economy.
Bought two for family lobstermen and after one month of regular wear, returned for refund due to inferior wool. Though the flame color and warmth were good, the loose weave easily unraveled, creating snags in both caps. Not a long term investment for the high price. Also, the one size fits all just doesn't work because people have different size heads, of course. For the price, Filson should make S, M, L, XL. There's room for much improvement with this beanie.
Hat is a little thin and the wind cuts through. I have a shaved head and I was hoping this would be a high quality answer to a bare head. Sadly, it's not. The part of the hat that is double back (over the ears), provides good warmth and protection against the wind. Again, on top of the head its too thin and let the wind through.
It seems like a very well-made cap, but it's definitely sized for smaller heads. I wear size 7 5/8 hats, and this beanie is extremely uncomfortable for me to wear. I wish I had read more reviews before ordering because I've seen several other people say the same thing. Mine is currently being returned. If you guys ever make a larger hat, I'd be interested in trying again.
quality seems to be declining. i bought the olive color watch cap about 3 years ago and when comparing the two the wool felt different. the new watch cap seems to be lighter and the wool feels cheaper. also the tag is different than the picture shown. the tag in the picture says "Filson 1897" but the new watch cap tag only says Filson. in conclusion, for 45 dollars you expect good quality but this feels like something i can buy for 10 dollars.
