Because I also had read a positive one about them being waterproof I went ahead and purchased. These are much more cushioned and feel great. I would buy a pair in moss color, except for the too-light lowers that would show dirt and look terrible considering their off-road intention. Why can't these be offered in moss with the black lower? You already have the components, just combine the two. Easy as an email from somebody in authority to the factory. Out of the box these are some of the best boots I have ever worn. I purchased them because I had a toe injury and wanted to make sure my feet were babied while hunting for grouse on The Gunflint Trail outside of Grand Marais Minnesota. I hiked in intense brush, through significant rocks, and all over boulders and hills. This book kept me warm and dry in a great way for fall in northern Minnesota. I felt comfortable and capable in all the conditions we encountered. When I saw this new release last year, I had to try them. I put these boots through a full test last winter. From every day use to operating a Snowmobile groomer through the whole season in far northern Wisconsin, these boots performed as good as incould have hoped. I experimented in using them for snowmobiling early in the season and can honestly say, they perform (I wore them as a Snowmobile boot replacement all season!) My feet were comfortable and stayed warm in all use conditions. The only failure point were the laces from constant daily use (replaced with kevlar laces.) I just pulled them out for their second full Winter season and hope they continue to hold up well. I cannot recommend these enough. In response to my review, Hoka sent me an email recommending a hiking boot that did not meet my need for a waterproof version. I put approximately 160-170 miles on them. I only do short 4 mile hikes. They were very cushioned, at first, and the shock absorption was good, for a bigger heavier person such as myself. After about two months, I needed to put in thick, aftermarket cushioned insoles because the cushion was getting compressed and not rebounding as it should. I could start to feel some stones under my feet. Even now when I wear them, there are still pressure points at my ankles and toes. The waterproofing worked really well up until about a month ago, then it failed. I have many pairs of hiking boots, most with gortex and I've never worn a hole in the gortex in any pair before, until these. These boots are not very sturdy. The word I would use is \"floppy.\" I went for an 8 mile hike in them and my feet and ankles hurt like never before. They're definitely not made for long distances carrying any decent amount of weight.
