I bought the Merrell Alverstone Hiking Sneaker 1.5 years ago, and only now is it is beginning to wear on the outside heal. I have worn these shoes almost everyday and they are a still like the day I bought them, just more comfortable. The only problem is they no longer make the Alverstone model that I own (J42281W), so I will need purchase the newer model (not as sharp looking).
When I first put the se shoes on, they felt like they were molded to my foot. I didn't even have to adjust the laces- they were just right. I especially like how the back of heel is molded so there's no slippage when walking. Also the heel of the sole is cushioned for a comfortable walk. Another positive feature is that the tongue is anchored on both sides so there's no sideways movement.
This shoe is amazing! I have had these since February and already put about 1,000 miles of daily use mixed between hiking, jogging, walking and they are still going strong! They have definitely taken a major beating and keep on going strong. The damage they have incurred is due to how hard I have treated them and they just won’t give up. I live in the PNW and Strong hiking shoes are a most and these delivered.
From the day I got them, break in period was very short, less than a week. Honestly, I had no issues other than learning how tight I wanted to make them during hikes because they fit so well straight from the box.
These have held up very well in water resistance and kept my feet very warm in the snow ( with my wool socks of course) - temperatures have been below freezing (20 degrees) and i never had an issues as long as I had wool socks on - and yes they can accommodate wool socks as long as you loosen up the laces just a little. I have done some very simple hikes to some very challenging hikes with these and they have saved my feet big time! I have also carried some packs upwards of 40-60 pounds and these shoes kept my feet comfortable and strong support.
If this is your first time hiking shoe or another pair added to your collection, these shoes will not let you down.
I plan on buying another pair because of how much I enjoyed these
I bought these based on positive reviews. So far the good reviews on comfort and fit have been right on the money. I have plantar fasciitis so it is very difficult to find a hiker that is comfortable for my feet. After a short 2 mile walk. I can report these are good for the short duration. Reasonably priced too. I am hiking in Utah next month so I will review them again after the hike. So far no complaints.
