I bought this shirt for my hubby for Christmas. He appreciates how warm it keeps him but as soon as he starts perspiring in the slightest it starts to smell like a wool horse blanket. I washed it for the first time and hung it to dry, the stench coming off of this shirt was just dreadful. I thought the other load of laundry I had going in the dryer was on fire. It smelled like hot wet laundry, I even went outside in -20 weather to check that my dryer vent was in fact clear. This shirt had the scent until it was completely dry and then smelled like a normal wool shirt. I have other merino wool layers that do not smell. I also bought the Scheels Churchill merino wool pants for my husband, these do not have any scent and I washed them together in the same load with cold water. Three stars for functionality minus two stars for the stench.
I love this shirt! Works great in the late Arizona season for deer. I ordered it in West river pattern and I blended with the high mountain terrain seamlessly. I washed it once and it shrunk down just a bit as it was a little baggy on me. I would like to get more from this series of clothing but the items seem limited it this pattern. At 6’ and 240 pounds the 2x is perfect for me.
Great price on a quality merino shirt. This camo pattern is exactly what I have been waiting for, no blocky green and blends great in open country. Only negative is it runs small, had to return for one size larger.
Like others have said, this is not what I would call true "base layer"--it is not tight fitting and is not a warm base layer. It's a decent camo 1/4 zip that I will wear as a layer when hunting, but for the price I wish I would've chosen something else.
