There are quite a few things I love about this piece: Excellent material, weight, arm/sleeve length, and very warm for the weight and bulk. Unfortunately, it just fits me very poorly compared to other Sitka gear. It is about an inch or so too short in the torso length, and there is enough extra material, in girth, around the lower body area that the jacket could fit someone with an extra 80lbs of beer gut. Not the slim and trim fit of other Sitka products, or what is pictured in the product photos.
I’m 6’4 200lbs and ordered a 2xl because of my length of arms and Fits me really good with room to layer. I put it on for the first time and played in the snow with my kids at 25 Degrees (Fahrenheit) with just a hoodie and T-shirt underneath it and wind was gusting up to 15 miles an hour not once did I even get a chill or feel the wind!! I’m amazed with the jacket. I can’t wait to wear during hunting season.!!
Love this piece. I think more of a 4.5 stars suits but I'll round up because of the versatility of this piece. While I ordered all my gear in Elevated II, I was looking at four layers... heavyweight merino top, Fanatic hoodie, Celsius midi and my Stratus jacket. While those four worked very well, it was just one layer too much for me. I bought the Cold Weather Hoodie in hopes of it replacing the Fanatic hoodie and Celsius midi in the late season and it was perfect! I love the integrated masks on all the Sitka gear I have. This hoodie is a great layering piece with the base layers and under the Stratus jacket. The hood itself is noticeably thicker than the Fanatic as is the mask, and at "Feel like 15", you are never cold. When the wind picked up, just lift the Stratus hood and you're good. The key to the entire set though is the neck gaiter. Adding the gaiter at 30 and below, I was never cold, seldom constricted. I wear glasses and a hearing aid and at times, extreme head twist to the sides would press the glasses into my ears/head due to the gaiter pulling the hood tighter. But generally I was always comfortable and found this piece to give me a TON more versatility in my layers. On days with temps at 25 or lower, I would add the Celsius midi over this and under my Stratus jacket, giving four layers and really good warmth. This jacket works great as an outer layer as well. Great fit, does its job as described and then some if you mix and match your layers by temperature.
I’ve worn the jacket 3 times for a few hours each as an outer layer. It’s definitely warm and a great pattern. The jacket started pilling under the arms after the second time I wore it. I reached out to customer service and was told pilling is normal and not under warranty. Very disappointed with the quality and durability. I wouldn’t purchase this again.
Love this Traverse hoodie it's a very versatile piece... One thing I love about Sitka gear is that many pieces are made to be worn as a layer or alone as a lighter weight jacket.. I first bought it to wear for cool morning turkey hunts but found it works great as a layer and hood under my dakota full zip that Sitka forgot to leave the hood on but that's a different review... No it's not windproof but it's great layered under a windproof jacket .. Wore it under my layout jacket in 12 degree cold NE CA, was warm, comfortable and didn't limit movement... kinda wish they made this in Optifade marsh as it's also a great early season waterfowl hoodie ...
Used in 25 degree temps on a high elevation mule deer hunt in very strong winds. Incredibly warm, incredibly comfortable. No issues with fit, or material bunching at the wrists as some of the other reviews say. Great job Sitka.
Little bit disappointed, I knew it was a soft shell jacket but with the warmth rating but I expected a little more. If you plan to purchase this jacket make sure to have something to wear with it because it doesn't offer any wind protection on its own!
The awkward fit of this piece is extremely frustrating. What Sitka or others refer to as an “athletic fit” feels like a belly shirt to me. This thing is WAY to short in the front. Furthermore the arms are WAY to long. If they were going to make the arms this long, you would think this hoodie would have thumb holes like some of Sitka’s other hoodies. No thumb holes means the sleeves are all bunched up around the arms. The materials and functionality of the piece are on par with Sitka superiority however, the fit is terrible. Instead of overthinking it, it would be nice if Sitka would make their gear fit like a standard piece of men’s clothing.
You know, I find the other reviews of this jacket not being an athletic fit, very interesting. I wear this jacket as a mid-layer, under my mountain jacket. It also fits over the heavy-weight hoody, as when I hunt it's around 20 degrees fahrenheit. If this jacket was any smaller, I would not be able to use it as a mid-layer. If it was any larger again... could not use as a mid layer. I honestly feel like this jacket solely kept me warm while I was sitting and not moving for hours in the mountains. I was even considering on finding something similar to be a pants mid-layer.
I guess I'm a weirdly shaped guy, I wear mediums despite being 205 pounds and 6' 1''. This jacket is perfect fitting for me, with my medium base layers, sometimes I wear the core lightweight and the heavyweight hoodies, depending on wind chill. Then over everything I wear a large mountain jacket. All feels perfect.
Honestly if the jacket is not fitting right currently, and is not "athletic enough," then size down... or maybe bulk up? I would highly recommend going to your local sporting goods store and layering all of the equipment you think you will use. If you use this right. This will become an invaluable tool to keep you warm.
Around 20-30 degrees I would recommend not to move in this jacket. Move in a heavyweight base layer and maybe a core base layer, with a Gore-Tex over top. When you get to where you are going drop the gore-tex and quickly put this jacket on to become your new mid-layer. It will do a good job of retaining the heat that is currently in your sweat, but the base-layers will retain the sweat. Then throw the Gore-Tex back on to help with wind chill. I found this was the best way to stay warm.
I’ve had this jacket now coming up on my fifth season! Still works great and keep me warm! As they say used with a good layering system you can’t go wrong. I will be using this jacket this year now with the stratus jacket over top on those teen days ! I recommend to anyone!
I agree with the other review about being too big and blousey from the bottom of ribcage down..Not an athletic fit, and not typical fit for Sitka.. Strange..
I own quite a few Sitka items and Love them all , that said I love my Dakota hoodie but want it in a full zip which they quit making for some reason . Came across this Traverse hoodie and decided to give it a try and happy I did . Haven't worn it hunting but I'm happy with it , the sizing is correct as I'm 5'9 170 and a large is just right in the regular cut . It will be a great pc alone or as a layer . The outer fabric is a lot like the Dakota just a bit softer feel , it has elastic around the cuffs and will keep you warm even in a breeze and I'm sure unless your in pouring rain it won't let you get soaked . Thanks to Scheels for a great price and free shipping
The name of this hoodie is deceiving. Not really meant for cold weather. More like a jacket you would wear when it's mildly cold. Definitely need to be layered if you plan on hunting in colder weather.
I have never been a hoodie kind of guy but the TCWH is now one of my favorite pieces. I have used in sub zero conditions as my outer layer and was comfortable the entire time. Two nights in spike camp I even slept in it due to the extreme cold and was warm and comfortable all night. I would absolutely buy again but so far this one shows no wear at all after a full season so I expect many years on the mountain with this one. I am 6' and 210lb the XL fits perfect with enough room underneath for tee shirt, merino 1/4 zip, and heavy weight 1/2 zip. That combo has served me well in many types of conditions.
