A friend gave me this bag and it’s my all time favorite. It can fit a surprising amount of gear, it holds my computer securely, its lightweight, and I like how easy it is to access everything. This bag beats backpacks because things are so easy to access.
I have been using this as a messenger bag (primarily) for a couple of months now, and am very pleased with it. This is a rugged piece, and very serviceable. Although this is more structured than I am used to, access through the top is a big selling point for me. The number of pockets inside are great feature.
I use a Dell Precision 3520 laptop for work, also carry around a large planner, 2 large books for the CFA exam, various items such as 2 phones, a Surface Pro 4, the lptp charger, a couple of bound Black & Red notebooks, various folders with work and personal stuff. The bag handles it easily.
I was concerned, that the front magnet/flap was a bit gimmicky, but lo and behold it's functional & easy.
The laptop is snug when putting it in the padded pocket, however it's nothing that causes me concern once it's closed. There is plenty of protection in the compartment where the padded sleeve is so I could probably use that instead then put the Surface in the padded pocket. You'll need to measure your laptop (as said in prior reviews). MR should consider adding a little more wiggle room in the next version if that's possible.
No concerns about backpack straps load bearing capacity. They stow very easily. When expanded briefcase handles are still easy to use.
You can not go wrong with this bag! My favorite and probably the best briefcase of all time! The only things I would change on the bag is the front pocket, wish the zippers came all the way down to the quick release magnet. Also the shoulder strap connecters/clips and rings that those connect to seem to be really cheap plastic (hope these do not break). But over all GREAT! Will do another review on how it holds up once I deploy on a fire assignment.
Purchased about a year ago as a new office bag, and it's become my go-to for everyday and weekend use. As a briefcase, it's very convenient and I'm able to easily store my 15" laptop and everyday necessities. Expanded, I can usually pack enough for a three day business trip and will deploy the backpack straps for help with the added weight. Even fully expanded I can fit this underneath the seat in front of me on flights. Feels much larger than 22L.
I've had the bag for a few months now and overall have really enjoyed it. I use it mostly for work and it easily holds all the essentials (laptop, papers, book, water bottle) with room to spare. Solid construction (as expected) and magnetic buckle on the front is pretty cool. The laptop compartment initially didn't feel cushioned enough but after using it I think it's perfect. My surface easily slides in and out and is held securely. The internal pockets keep things well organized though I agree that a zipper or some kind of closure for some of them may be a nice addition.
Other areas for improvement - The shoulder strap is extremely squeaky and I replaced it already. A removable, padded strap with hardware to match the zipper pulls and buckle would be great (even if it was an optional cost). Also, the outside has basically no lash points. While I understand this is a briefcase, a place to clip a water bottle or strap on a jacket would be a nice addition.
Just received my 3 Way Expandable in black. Satisfied with the construction. I would like to see this 2.5" longer and 2.5" taller. 15" Macbook fits but snug. Not a chance on my wider laptops. Would like to see a better strap with snaps as well as a few more internal pockets in the front compartment. Magnetic latch is awesome! I'm going to give it a go.
Perfect bag, for all the facets of my 60/30/10 life
As a self-identited young professional who see’s himself as 60% disgruntled veteran, 30% yuppie, and 10% hipster this bag is perfect for me. From wearing a suit and tie (slim fit of course) to weekend trips to the downtown library and coffee shop on my fixed gear bike this bag is perfect for me.
The ability to switch to between a shoulder strap or back pack straps has been handy. Many on here complain about the shoulder strap... but I heard a guy said that the SEC told the owners of the strap wasn’t week, that Mystery Ranch could face anti-trust law violations for making the perfect bag.
The magnetic buckle is a cool feature, when I am at the coffee shop and can’t get to my wallet I leave a debit card in my bag and the magnetic closure makes for a quick seal as I take my artisan Sanka back to table.
I have been a Mystery Ranch fan since my first tour in Iraq, became a loyalist in Afghanistan, and now a small business leader, you have been there for all my transitions
This bag would be great if it were big enough. Mystery Ranch claims it's 17 inches long, but the one I received is under 16 inched long and does not fit any of my laptops. The expandability is a great idea, but the way the flap zips does not actually create much additional space when expanded. It could be a great bag if it were significantly larger. With its current size it's not very useful.
Its held up very well to all my travels across the country. was able to replace my SOC bag with this. At fist i didn't think it was going to be big enough, its plenty big. I can hand double of everything in this guy. After replacing the strap with something less squeaky very happy with the product.
I guess the new version has a magnet for the clip. sounds nice.
I have some very specific requirements for a laptop bag for work, which this bag nearly perfectly satisfies. I want something that looks good enough for my (relatively casual) workplace without looking too stodgy. Most of the time I carry it like a briefcase, unless my hands are full in which case I use a shoulder strap. Except when I'm biking, I want to be able to wear it as a backpack. Except if I have a larger piece of luggage on my back, in which case back to the shoulder strap.
As such, I love the versatility of this bag. I have only a few minor design tweaks to suggest: - It could use a place or two to secure keys - straps or a rings to attach a carabiner to, on the inside. As it stands, there is absolutely nowhere to put my keys that I don't worry they'll fall out or get lost. - I would like more than just the one zipper pocket, especially since the bag is sideways when in backpack mode. Stuff in the organizational pockets falls out. - The cushion on the bottom of the laptop section is pretty stiff, seems like maybe it ought to be a little squishier.
The buckle on that front flap is one I've never seen before. It's magnetic, and basically you can just let it flop anywhere near its other half and it finds its way home. Very cool.
I haven't used the expandability feature yet, but I definitely will - expanded, I expect this to be just about perfect as my only bag for trips of just a night or two.
All in all, I'm very happy with it. Though I would've preferred that it be made in the USA, it seems very well made from quality materials.
For professional travel/business purposes, I love this bag. This pack works brilliantly on the road for long business trips or day to day commuting. I kept this bag as a dedicated laptop/electronics bag. For everyday carry, My 15" MacBook was very padded and protected. The expandable main compartment was great for storing cables, mouse, super drive and accessories. There is also an an internal "sleeve" for easily sliding documents in and out, without disturbing the contents of the bag.
For longer business trips, having the extra room to expand the main compartment was appreciated. I was able to add large over-the-ear headphones, and additional accessories for my other electronics.
The hook and loop panel sewn into the main compartment is obviously useful for concealed carry purposes, but I was able to uses aftermarket hook and loop accessories, attached to PALS compatible pouches, and simply stick additional pockets to the inside of my bad as needed. This was very welcome, as I was able to avoid damage and store my external memory drive in the bag, and keep it up and elevated off the bottom and away from the sides of the bag.
The ability to convert the bag into backpack carry mode was also very useful. This made scurrying about airports with large luggage bags much easier, and the carry-on process much easier.
My only critique of this bag is the asymmetrical shape the bag takes on as it is expanded and loaded down. This makes the use of the outside cover/flap very limited to storing/organizing tiny items. There appears to be some wasted space that could have been designed better.
Overall, I love this bag for professional, computer, everyday carry. it does it all.
