Silky smooth casting! Tried it out this week on Pikes Peak and it worked perfectly. Great casting distance and smooth reel in , especially with fish on the line.
It will be missed. I'm about to buy a replacement.
I received this reel as a 40th birthday gift. Hands down, the best reel I've ever had! My son and I were crossing a river and he lost his footing dropping my rod/reel which I promptly scooped up. Next thing I know he's about to float pass me and he's face down. I let go of the rod to grab him instead. After a long struggle, and quite a bit further down the river, I managed to get him to shore out of the white water. I'm sure I saved his life that day. It turns out when he slipped, the rapids pulled his pants down to his ankles "hobbling" him and the force of the water on his jeans was like an underwater sail. It was pulling him under with a lot of force. The rod and reel wouldn't have made it through the Rapids and were most likely destroyed. I still have my son to fish with and I can replace the Pleuger reel. Timmy felt bad about losing the reel. I told him the reel is replaceable, he's not. I also told him now we get to go rod/reel shopping.
Bought it brand new from Bass Pro. Used maybe 5 times, and pretty sure it blew a bearing. Tired to contact customer service via email, and no reply. Currently on hold at the 1800 number. They better rectify this.
I've fished with many reels over the years and after I bought my first pflueger president it was over. I now own a 20, 30 and 35 and just bought my wife a trion. I will no longer buy any reel that isnt a pflueger.
I've owned 8 of these reels. Used to be my favorite. The old version lasted forever. I've had the bail break on 2 of these new versions now after 1 season of use. Opened one up and it has plastic parts inside. This was my go to reel. Now I'm shopping for something else and recommend you do too.
I have 6 Pflueger reels, 6720 (1), 6730 (1), 6740 (1), Summit XT35 (1) and two 8230 MGX. I have been using them since 2005 and would not buy another brand. They are so easy to strip down and clean every winter. When I say strip down I mean about 33 individual pcs. per reel. They still work like right out of the box. The negative reviews listed tells me they don't know how to care for their equipment!
I’ve had the 20 for about a year. Got it at Walmart for about $40, and Put it on a Fenwick eagle rod. Spoiled it with 4lb Trilene XT. It is a sweet little reel, with a super smooth drag. Although I bought this rig for panfish, I used it for smallies and some largemouth, hauling in some nice bass in the Carolinas and in Maine.
I beat these reels to death. I'm one of those guys that is out on the lake all the time. Years of giving these reels a beat down I finally broke a couple of bail springs. Which I am buying replacements for now. Highly recommended!
So I'm not going to lie.. I caught most of my 40+ Bass this year on this reel. But just the other day I was out fishing my favorite spot, when I hooked into a massive pickerel. In the midst of battling the fish, all of a sudden the reel just snapped off my rod. I then proceeded to hand line 40 feet of braid onto shore. I would not buy from the President line of reels again. The "Strong Graphite Body" is not that strong after all.
I thought i was purchasing a quality Pflueger reel. More issues with this real than I have ever had with any other reel. On my third use, the bail fell apart and into the water. Before this, the line would always tangle and birds nest like no other reel I have ever used. Many other quality choices out there. Do not waste your time or money on this one.
I have been using Pflueger reels in my guide business for years and find that they are a very good reel and have a great price. You will be hard pressed to find this type of reel for these prices that perform like much more expensive reels.
With the sterling reviews, I thought this reel was a sure thing. However, I've had nothing but bird nests with it. I've tried three different fishing lines ($40) and bought a spooler ($30). Nevertheless, the line spools unevenly and then twists and tangles whenever I cast. This is the second Pflueger reel I've bought, and I have problems with both. Suffice it to say, I no longer am a customer.
The new reels are pretty but they don’t work well. I have fished the Pfluegar President reels for over 15 years and have five or six open faced reels and three different bait casters..,. BUT the new reels are different. They are subpar at best.
I just got back from northern Michigan where we spent the week chasing trophy smallmouth bass. My older reels (over two years old performed flawlessly. However, the reel I bought this year created a lot of havoc. First, the spool travel was not sufficient to maintain a level wind. The older reels maintained a level wind throughout the week but the new reel “piled up” the line on the lower part of the reel. Second and most annoyingly, the line kept getting under the spool itself and wrapping around the spindle. Finally, despite tripping the bail by hand this new reel experienced significantly more line twist than the older reels.
I would still buy the “old” style reels if I could find them. However, these new reels have been “cheapened up” so much that I will not be buying or recommending them any more.
I recently bought the President spinning reel size 20 and use it mainly for trout fishing. Spooled with 4# test it's a perfect fit with my 6 foot Okuma SST ultralight rod. Recently I was fishing with my kayak crappie fishing, when I hooked a 4# largemouth. The drag performed flawlessly and boated the bass within a few minutes. Got a pic and released safely.
I am a President fan since I pulled in a 50+flathead on 12 lb. Test with one. Smooth and accurate cast. My complaint is, the handle unscrewed and fell out in the woods. The company said they dont have handles to replace. I am confused by this since they still make them. Then the bail snapped the plastic bail holders while in my fish bucket somehow. I am very careful with my gear so not sure how it broke. I bought a supreme and will see how it goes. Cheap plastic is the bane of humanity.
The quality of this reel seems to be top notch. Smoooooth. I am no expert by any means but I can't imagine what would be different about one that costs three times as much. I wouldn't change anything about it and would buy three of these before spending three times as much on one and have em all going at once. With permit of course.
These spinning reels are the best you can get for the price. I have 3 of them and have only had replaced one because it was stolen. As long as these are on the shelves I won't even look at another brand. If your price limit goes to $50-$60, definitely put these at the top of your list of reels to compare.
I have 3 off these reals thatcIvuse for ice fishing. I absolutely love them. Yah, I know, what do I need such a quality reel for ice fishing? Well, let me tell you, I don’t need to be messing with a cheep real, while ice fishing, just like when I’m summer fishing out of a boat. There is nothing better, than a high quality reel when fishing any time of the year. I will be buying larger reels from you guys for summer fishing. By the way, I’ve ice fished with 2 of your 20’s , for 3 years. Absolutely no problems. Love them! Keep up the good work!
We have been using pflueger reels for 30 plus years, they are reliable for walleye, crappie, smallmouth bass and others. I will be buying them again and if you purchase these reels you will satisfied as well
These reels are superior quality with excellent components and workmanship. They cast well, are smoother than many other higher priced brands and the drag system works perfect. I use these for bass fishing and can tell you that you will not be disappointed with this reel. I have gone away from every other brand and strictly use the pflueger presidents on my spinning gear due to the quality of product for the money. 5 Stars *****
There's a reason I see so many of these reels. My fishing is river fishing, and it's super tough on the gear. I don't have the budget for expensive reels, but once I switched to the Presidents I realized I don't have to spend tons of money on the quality required. They simply hold up for a long, long time.. And they hold up without compromising quality.. I have never NOT trusted this drag with a big fish on, I have never replaced a bail spring, and I have never had the gears clog up.. Don't know how they make this quality at this price...
