I am a serious dog owner and trainer. I bought the collar because my local shop was out of my dog's size in the collar I would normally buy. The only thing it's got going for it is that it is reflective. The first problem is that it is very difficult to tighten the collar while it's on your dog's neck, and it needs to be tightened enough that the collar won't slip off, so you can't adjust it properly and then slip it on. The second problem is that the collar gradually loosens over time if your dog happens to pull on the lead. Finally, the hole in the metal friction plate is so tiny that you can't attach tags to the ring that is supplied, or any other ring. I fussed with this collar for an hour to attach the tags and fit it to my dog's neck, then it loosened up over the course of the day so that my dog could easily slip out of it.
This collar great quality and looks awesome on my sweet girl. Unfortunately, after about three months of wear, I've noticed this has worn the hair off her neck where it sits. She's a german shepherd English Stafford terrier mix so her coat is a bit unusual. I'd imagine that this would work on thicker, longer hair dogs but sadly my Bella girl cannot wear it anymore.
We really wanted to love this collar. Actually we did love it! Our girl looked so adorable in this collar. One day we noticed that she had lost a huge patch of fur on her neck. The hair loss was also making her neck super itchy, and she was scratching so much it caused her to scab over on part of it. We ended up needing to take her to the vet and get her antibiotics. We did not have this on her too tight and we never noticed her fur getting caught in it, but by the time we noticed she had already rubbed her neck raw. We really loved the look of this with her matching leash, we just cant risk using it anymore as we do not want her to have to be this uncomfortable again.
I’d admit that not fully understanding the collar before I purchased it is on me. I didn’t realize that there was no detachment point to open the collar—the knots only slide to allow it to become larger and smaller. As a result, I can’t put my dog’s lay-flat tag on the collar (I realize I could untie the fisherman’s knots, but I am paranoid about not being able to secure them again as snugly as they came). In addition, my dog’s long coat sometimes gets stuck in the knots as I’m trying to adjust it. I’d think this would work much better on a short-haired pooch. I’ve always loved Ruffwear’s products, and will continue to buy, but I’ll be going for something else next time.
I like that it doesn’t wear down their fur like flat collars. It seems very comfortable for them. It is very strong so you can attach a leash to it with ease. It may not be great for dogs that pull excessively as the rope may dig into the neck more than a flat collar. I really love the quality hardware. Our Girls are hunting dogs, these collars work well at home and also in the field with their GPS collars
I like this collar so much. I have a very active pittie puppy and want something to match her personality and go well with other training collars we use. This is simple, easy to adjust, clean and attractive, and pairs well with anything. We use carabiners for her leash attachments and this fits easily without hassle. I spent a lot of time looking for a collar that would be durable. I love that this doesn’t have cheap plastic, or buckle, and that it’s always on. Perfect product! I’ll never buy another!
We love these collars! I’ve been looking for an everyday collar that our pups can wear with their tags in case they were ever to get out and lost. Traditional collars always left an indentation in their fur and didn’t allow for quality neck scratches. These knot-a-collars are perfect! They don’t leave rings around my doggos’ necks and I can give them proper scritches without removing their clothes. Love them!
Love it. Picked up one at a discount store with no labels. My dog loved it. Finally found your company and bought a second collar and a Knot a Long leash... Perfect length. Always get comments when out or in stores.
I really wanted to like this collar. I like the minimal concept and "basicness" of the collar. However it never occurred to me until I saw it when my order arrived what a HUGE safety risk it is. With no buckle or quick release the choking hazard should the dog get tangled in something is real. The collar is adjustable by moving the knots to lengthen or shorten the rope. It takes a little bit of strength and leverage but I finally got it adjusted to where I could slip it over my dogs head. Only to find I had made it TOO large. While on my dog I couldn't get the right leverage and strength to move the knots so off the collar came while I tried to find just the right position to get the collar over my dogs head without it being too tight or too loose. Imagine my dismay when out on a walk with just some leash tension and my dog zigging while I zagged the knots/rope lengthened on it's own to the point where my dog could have slipped out of the collar! I love the look of the collar, love the hardware, but this just wasn't a good idea for us.
I have a Golden Retriever with a very thick coat and this blend nicely and shows just enough for a little bling. Great way to hold his ID and doesn’t get in the way of his Front Range harness. My boy is quite the fashion statement on walks!
Zeke uses a martingale collar on walks so he doesn’t back out of the collar... a harness at the field... a life jacket in the boat... So I wanted a minimal collar so we weren’t having to clip tags to whatever we had him on. This works great with all of the above without any bulk. Love it!
Overall the collar works but it does loosen up with any pulling. We have to redo the knots once or twice a day at a minimum. Also, be careful with your fingers as they can get twisted in the collar if your dog moves around!!
We have loved this collar from the very beginning! It fits well, is easily adjustable and therefore grows with our very active pup, Ranger. Great for naps, backyard hangs, and adventures! We are e-collar training, and great to have a low profile collar that can be on at the same time as the e-collar. We only wish is that it would come in more colors!
I really love the collar and so does my Catahoula pup, Winnie. It’s super easy to take on and off if you’ve got an antsy pup (Winnie). It is also easily washable for pups that love exploring the more muddy areas outside (also Winnie). It adjusts fairly easily and the matching leash is just perfect too. Winnie is 6 months old and about 40-45 lbs and the small size works just great! She can definitely grow with this collar.
I like the look of this collar but it did not work well with our dog. You have to be careful when you tighten the collar as it can catch your dog's fur and pull it out. Our dog has longer hair in the neck area so this collar seemed to pull on the fur and cause discomfort for him. The look and idea is great but doesn't work for us.
Actually, these collars are the best I've ever owned. Super lightweight, easy on and off, great for my dogs who play in the ocean every day, plus they look amazing with the matching leashes. Solid 10 product.
We love this collar and so does our dog! It's easy to clip him to his leash and go. It's not so thick that it covers our dog's neck like some other collars. We also love the added rubber piece that helps his dog tag not sound like a racket every time he moves. Our pup gets many compliments on his collar! We'll continue to buy this collar as long as Ruffwear makes it!
not for a versatile active dog that trains in all kinds of terrain .....in and out of water.............it is not secure enough ..ie the know slips the more it gets wet and dries........so I have 3 that I can not use.......I thought they would be perfect as my dogs wear tracking collars as well.........but it needs a redesign. I love the idea of the cord!!
As previously, there are many things I like about these collars. They can be worn fairly loosely and don’t bunch up the dogs neck hair like flat buckle collars do (more comfy?). Also, it’s so handy having the leash latch always sitting right there at the top. I know from experience that these collars last forever (9 years and counting for my older dog). The only small thing about this latest one is that although it’s the gray colored collar, at the knots where the raw end of the cord shows there are red fibers. Small cosmetic detail but it does bother me a bit.
This collar is super easy to adjust depending on what we're doing. It is simple but gorgeous on our pup and the matching leash were perfect for him. We plan to outfit our other 2 dogs with the same products.
My dogs are severe puller, so we just put these collers for the name tags along with harnesses. So I am not sure about the function itselt, but it is so pretty and light. So I am happy with this collar.
I got hooked on the Knot a Collar with my last Lab. He passed away and my lab puppy was quick to learn what these awesome collars are about. He outgrew his collar and wore a regular collar while I waited on replacement. When we put it on him the other night he even got excited about how it felt. Very durable, great colors, and the leash attachment on top is amazing. Only way to make this collar better is to make that attachment to double as a bottle cap opener.
Traditional collars always put the leash ring too close to the buckle or snap. Due to some upper spine damage my hands don't feel or work like they use to. I have been searching for a collar for over a year now and have a small box of them which seemed ok but ultimately were way too frustrating to work with. The moment I viewed the Knot-a-collar I knew it was my answer. The collar is weighted so that the l leash ring is always at the top when on the dog. This makes it so easy for me to find and hook on. If I could have a wish list it would be to place a extra hole on the breast plate to hookup his Hailti lead. I modified the plate myself to make using it easier.
We have bought two of these for our Labrador and absolutely love them, would not have any other collar now. We live in the Swiss mountains and find these to be super easy and non-obtrusive for the dog and seem to be very comfortable for her. On days when we want a little more control, we put on the Ruffwear harness, but we only use that if travelling on a long train journey or something. They even survive the mud and all sorts, and are washed easily! Please never stop making these Ruffwear! (and a lovely light sage green colour would be great too!) ;)
