Pre-chill your SCHEELS 105 Hard-Shell Super Cooler before items are placed inside your cooler for a minimum of 4 hours ideally overnight before use.
Pre-Chill Your Cooler:
Purchase extra ice and let this sit in the cooler during pre-chilling. Discard pre-chilled ice and fill with fresh ice after loading contents. Or, you can also pre-chill with dry ice. Using dry ice (CO2) made from frozen carbon dioxide can help achieve an even lower cold temperature, without water residue. Be sure to handle dry ice with caution, always wear gloves, as it can quickly freeze overnight, if possible, for most ideal pre-chilling.
Pre-Chill Your Contents:
Always chill or freeze any goods before placing your food or beverage products in the cooler.
Maintain Super Cold Conditions in the Cooler:
Keep some melted ice inside your cooler to help insulate the remaining ice Open lid as little as possible to help reduce adding warm outside air Beware of the different ice properties: Block ice will melt slower than cube ice, but cube ice offers a larger total surface area to cool items faster. Using a mixture of both block and cube ice is suggested. Start with very cold, solid ice rather than ice that is wet from melting Fill the cooler with as much ice as possible to reduce empty air areas Adding some dry ice to your ice mixture will help keep your cooler longer. Remember to be careful and handle dry ice with gloves. Also, allow for adequate ventilation for CO2 Gas. Top off your ice filled cooler with rock salt, which helps to naturally lower the melting point of water, keeping the inside extra cold.
It is a good value but the the reversible feet are not easily reversed. There is some kind of glue on the bolts that can lock them making damage to the cooler very likely if you remove them. One bolt just spun till it melted the cooler material and it pulled out still frozen. I put 2 wrenches on the now melted plastic covered bolt and broke the glue free and was able to press the insert back into the base of the cooler. Trust me you will want the slippery side of the feet exposed since this heavy cooler is very hard to drag out of the pickup when the “tacky” side of the feet are down. Also the metal ruler ( which is a fine idea) but in my example the glue that attaches it immediately came loose on one end (in the heat of the day). It should be attached with screws.
The insulation characteristics of this cooler are decent. For the price it is an acceptable cooler.
Initial quality appears on par with all other major manufactures of rotomolded coolers. Purchased this on sale with free shipping at almost half what one would pay for yeti/pelican etc. Too good of a deal to pass up.
These coolers are awesome! We used them for our annual off-roading trip in the south. Left one in the back of the truck and one in he back if our razor for 5 days. We put a garbage bag full of ice from our hotel in the bottom and it keep everything cold for 3+ days. We added ice on day 3 but here was still ice in the bag and everything was really cold. These work just as good as the yeti's and are cheaper. Worth the money!
