So far very impressed with quality and fit with this pack. Been doing short walks with 40 lbs. All is good. Big trips planned for summer before doing a number of sheep hunts this fall.....will keep you posted
I poured over videos and articles reviewing this backpack to see if its fully worth the price. I went to different stores, tried on many different bags and set up a pros/cons on all the bags. It took my 8 months to finally pull the trigger on buying this... and its great!! The ability to custom fit the bag is great and the versatility of the bag, frame and shelf is like no other bag I've tried. You can fit the bag to fit really well on your body which makes long hikes and elevation much easier with no hot spots and good weight distribution. Increased weight actually makes the bag feel better, it pushes the weight into and down your body, not backwards feeling like it will tip you over(I loaded 75lbs in bag and shelf.) Within the first week I put 1500ft and 29000ft vert hikes and a 9mile hike in to test this bag. I did a little bit of adjusting each hike but now I've got it set and it feels perfect. The only reason it doesn't get a 1000% 5 Star review is lack of extras. You have to buy extra a rain fly, camp or swing pockets, belt pockets etc. For the price, I feel like a rain fly would at least be included. Does this make me upset enough to not buy it or even recommend it?? Absolutely not!! Its an awesome pack and will be great for everything I plan on putting to it. Just would be nicer if it had those little "extra" features included in the higher price
After a lot of research, I pulled the trigger on SGs Sky 5900 and I’m glad I did. The quality is great and after a few practice loads around the our field I can say it hauls the weight well. Love the length of all the straps. I’m pumped to load it up next by season with more than a bunch of rice!
Long story short: I bought the Sky 5900 and another top-tier pack company's flagship bag with the intention of returning the loser. To be honest, I was leaning towards the other manufacturer before I got my hands on either bag. I loaded both up with the same amount of weight and tested them head-to-head. The Xcurve frame made it a no-brainer. It stayed on my hips with no sag whatsoever and didn't roll when stepping over fences or anything. Stone Glacier's customer service was the best I've ever dealt with. I was connected to the same person for 3 separate calls and the gentleman was willing to have a no-bs conversation with me about bag options. The whole experience has made me a loyal customer going forward.
This was my first experience shopping with Stone Glacier and I've been very impressed. I was able to call and talk to Jake who was able to get this pack boxed up and shipped out to me the same day. It arrived with plenty of time to get it set up and broken in. After putting 100 miles in with this pack I really have no complaints. It fits really well on the xcurve frame and the compression straps keep everything nice and snug.
Listen, this pack is going to be the best pack that I have ever owned and for the price that one pays, it had better be the best. I would give it a 5-star review for quality and capability but I just can't get over the fact that every accessory is an add-on rather than a standard issued with the pack. I absolutely hate that an accessory pocket, camp pocket, gun sling, and Hydro sleeve aren't included in the already expensive price. Stone Glacier has created these accessories as paid for add-ons because they know how necessary they are to complete the pack and fully utilize it's strengths. In reading and researching this is a common complaint about Stone Glacier and although I don't expect them to care enough to change the process they do need to be made aware that it's a poor customer experience and overall disappointment.
I have about 50 miles on the pack in the mountains of Colorado chasing elk. I had about 20-25lbs and never had any hot-spots and felt the pack was comfortable. Unfortunately wasn't able to put an elk on the ground so I couldn't speak to its ability with a packout. I love the ability to use the pack as a day pack. I ran the pack without the lid for day use. I will need to get a couple of swing out pockets or camp pockets since I like a little more organization than what it has; it is just an open pack. My only complaint is that the sternum strap squeaks with every breathe so that is unfortunate especially when trying to listen for sounds, but I can probably get another one just don't want to have to. I would recommend this pack to others.
I love this pack! I have searched off and on for the last couple years trying to decide on a general purpose pack that has meat and gear hauling capability. Nothing ever seemed quite like the right blend of form and function until I found Stone Glacier products. I am very impressed with everything Stone Glacier is doing.
I have finally been able to use this bag on two separate elk hunts so far this year and it has worked awesome. I hauled a bull elk out the opener weekend in MT and used it on a backcountry hunt in WA. Great design for 4-5 day rips (longer if need be). I love the front pouch for small items or clothes and the compressability of the main bag is pretty remarkable. I would highly recommend.
Didn't Know What a Real Pack was Meant to Feel Like!
I came from running budget friendly day packs from reputable manufacturers, but recently took the dive into back country camping/hunting. I grabbed this pack for this season, and just fitted it following the video procedures they give. WOW! I didn't know something so heavy could be so comfortable, it is absolutely amazing from the limited use it's had. I'm hoping to test out the meat shelf sometime soon, but I have no question it will perform! Excellent product, great workmanship, and incredible customer service.
I know that the pack is adjustable and I have watched several videos. I just find it difficult to get it fit and I still need to install the sling and water bottle carrier. If I lived closer I would drive there and see if I could get help, however I am in Washington. I have and use several different packs and this one is the most awkward I own.
The pack arrived just in time for an 8-day Yukon sheep hunt. While it's early days yet, with just one hunt with it, I'm very pleased - the pack performed just as I'd hoped, and surpassed expectations for comfort under a heavy load. I carried a 48kg load back down the mountain, and while it definitely felt heavy, it never felt uncomfortable. I'm impressed with the adjustability, simplicity and attention to detail - it's obvious there's been a lot of time spent on design, by people intimately familiar with mountain hunting.
My experience with Stone Glacier has been great. From the start of calling and asking questions about ordering the correct waist size to the easy ordering process and quick processing/shipping. I’ve already loaded the pack up with weight and have taken it out on a long hike in the Kodiak, AK mountains and love it. Looking forward to using it for this falls deer/bear/goat hunts. Thanks Stone Glacier!
Needed a little more storage for a multi day Alaska hunt then my Solo bag so I picked up the sky 5900 bag. Love this bag, top notch, love the access thru the middle of the panel. On the hunt I was able to go from just about bivy mode to fully expanded when I carried extra gear during a mid week camp change, was awesome to have that option.
Pack was very comfortable on its maiden voyage- balances and moves with you. No creeks; no pops, and it did not fight you. The best pack I have worn. Will update as hunting season arrives and the weight of the loads increases.
I had to order this pack last minute I didn’t realize my two kids out grew their gear. So a few days before our 30 mile backpack trip I needed a new pack for myself I gave my son my other name brand pack. Stone glacier was great to deal with they didn’t have it in stock at the time but called me as soon as one came in and shipped it immediately. I gave this pack a good workout before hunting season and was completely impressed, it fit Like a glove and was a lot more comfortable then my other expenses packs. On day three I ended up carrying all my daughters and half my wife’s gear do to foot pain. (they didn’t want me to but I wanted to test a heavy weight pack anyway) It was an 11 mile day and the pack was a joy to wear no discomfort at all. Thanks Stone Glacier.
So far, I've only used it for training with about 35-45lbs of weight added, but it carries very well. Takes some effort to get it adjusted well, but love the ability to really dial in the pack fit. Rigid frame is very tolerant of weight placement and allows minimal shifting. A month of use, and it seems to be very durable, well made, and well designed. Looking forward to my first 100lb load of meat with it.
Got this pack about 6 weeks ago, first thing I noticed was the Made In The USA quality. Hiked with a weighted sand bag and the comfort and stability were unmatched. Hunted in it this last weekend and I could not be happier with my purchase. My previous pack was Kuiu, most likely made in Ethiopia or somewhere cheap so they could make a profit over a quality product; It squeaked and creaked with every step unlike the SG pack. Don’t think about it, just buy this pack, you won’t be disappointed.
This pack screams back country b@d @ss. No BS compartments just your straight up bread and butter to access all your necessities in the back country. I hope you have strong shoulders cause this pack can take a pounding. I feel much more supported and comfortable since pulling the trigger. I feel bad for all the future blacktail and elk cause with this Sky 5900 I am truly able to move like an apex predator.
I have used SG packs now from the minute they hit the market. I just can’t see how you could improve any of the products released by this company and this pack falls straight into that category. I just love the way all these products from packs, to the de haviland pants are tested and retested, all the finer details refined then tested again and built from indestructible materials and components. I have nothing but full faith in all the SG products. Love the pack and everything else
Last elk season (2019) we killed a really nice bull elk and my buddy had a sky 5900 and I had the kuiu pro. We devided up the weight as best we could and both started packing out. A little ways into the trip he commented on how well his sky 5900 handled the load. We both wanted to see how each pack felt with approximately 100 lbs of weight so we switched out and compared them. Without getting into all the detail, the sky 5900 was the clear winner. When you started to get fatigued or soar in an area, the adjustability of the 5900 definitely won out. The SG pack system secures the load tighter minimizing movement. I now own a sky 5900 and train in it 2 to 3 times a week with 60 lbs and couldn’t be happier.
This pack fits like a glove. My original plan for the pack is to sheep hunt this fall in the Brooks Range. I'm currently using it for weekend Black Bear hunts in the White Mountains outside Fairbanks, Alaska. I've used it for fishing trips as well. Needless to say this is my go to pack for everything. Only thing I wish it came with was the rain cover, I'll be ordering that soon. Perfect is all the best word to sum this pack up, absolutely Perfect.
Just wanted to say my family and I love the packs. I was the first to order. My wife and son have now ordered as well we have been getting out preparing for a backpacking trip this summer. Packs are great and it has inspired a new family activity. Thanks
