Product Description

Fuel EX 5 is the gateway to full suspension trail bikes. Trail-taming front and rear suspension, a Shimano 1x12 drivetrain, a dropper post for getting low on descents, and hydraulic disc brakes make Fuel EX 5 a high-value, high-performance mountain bike with exceptional versatility.

It's right for you if...
You're ready to go full suspension, and you want a versatile trail bike at a great value. You want a ride that's sure-footed, capable, and responsive so you can stay in control no matter where you're riding.

The tech you get
A lightweight aluminum frame with a Knock Block steerer stop to protect against spinning bars. A 140mm RockShox Recon Silver fork, 130mm of rear travel with an X-Fusion Pro 2 shock, a durable 12-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain, dropper post, and hydraulic disc brakes.

The final word
You get full suspension performance without the sticker shock. Fuel EX 5 has the same frame technology as our higher-end alloy Fuel EX models with parts chosen to keep the price tag low and stoke level high.

Why you'll love it:
  • You get a high-end ride at an exceptional value with frame features like Boost148 and ABP that give you confident handling and room to upgrade parts as your skills grow
  • It has the capability of far more expensive trail bikes: it shreds singletrack and can even handle the occasional XC or enduro race
  • The dropper post lets you lower your saddle on the fly so it's out of the way on descents
  • The RockShox fork's Solo Air spring can easily be adjusted for a specific rider weight, and it's lighter than a coil spring
  • We expanded our size range to ensure a better fit for all riders. And, you get the fastest wheel that fits your frame: XS frames get 27.5˝ wheels, S frames get to choose between 27.5˝ or 29˝, and sizes M to XL get 29˝ wheels

  • Alpha Platinum Aluminum - Our premium lightweight aluminum is continuously cold extruded and butted and multiple points, and hydroformed into sophisticated tube shapes for maximum strength and minimum weight.
  • Control Freak Cable Management - The lightest, quietest, most versatile cable management system allows any combination of shift, brake, lockout, and dropper post lines to be routed through the frame for clean looks and the ultimate custom setup.
  • Mino Link Adjustable Geometry - Fine tune head tube angle by 1/2 degree and BB height by up to 10mm with the simple turn of a nut. Just flip the link to choose between slack or slacker geometry, without negatively affecting suspension performance. A Trek exclusive.
  • Boost148/110 - Wider dropouts (110mm front, 148mm rear) give you the stiffness of a 27.5" wheel with all the benefits of a 29" wheel, and Boost148 in the rear lets you run widers tires and larger chainring without affecting q-factor and pedaling efficiency.

Will my bike have a curved top tube?
Smaller frames (XS and S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don't have the same issues with standover height.

Active Braking Pivot
Active Braking Pivot allows our engineers to tune how the suspension reacts to acceleration and braking forces independently. That means you get more confident control when you need it most.

Straight Shot w/Knock Block
Trek's Straight Shot frame design optimizes the stiffness-to-weight ratio for a more responsive ride. You'll be able to push harder and stay more planted on your line when the going gets rough.

2nd trek fuel bike, but upset about the paint
So, I am coming from a 2013 Fuel EX6 I purchased new one 2014. I have rode and upgraded to the max, needed a new bike. Went back with a EX5 after 3 rides I noticed 2 chips in the paint. Kinda upset, I'm gonna try reaching out to trek because paint is part of the warranty, and after years of riding and carrying the EX6 has nothing like this. Seems the forums have a lot of on going issue with treks paint quality. Overall, the bike is amazing, it's crazy what a few years of improvements can really make, or maybe it's the 26" to now a 29" but it just feels 10x more stable, and happy I went with the EX5 and able to upgrade as I progress

I really enjoy the strength the TREK brand carries.
Purchased a Fuel EX5, riding while I dial everything in. From there I'll upgrade specific parts. The first of which will be a better de-railer.

My first real Mountainbike
As the title says this is my first real mountainbike and I am in love with it. I do street riding, stunts, trails, lots of uphill and sometimes even downhill riding and this bike is made for it all. Super efficent pedaling, great stability and comfort and awesome handling. I've never felt like I have encountered something to ruff for this bike. Even when riding down moutains going over 40 mph on jumps and roots this bike just feels great. I would not trade this bike for any other on the market. If you can afford it, buy it!

By far best value for the money.
I purchased this bike to "hang" with my boys on the mountain bike trails around Florida. Now they think I'm getting skills, but I give it up to the bike. It's more than a bike, it's a machine!

Great bike, really pleased with purchase
I bought the bike (in the UK) to use on mtb trails and bridleways near where I live. The EX5 is a world away from 90's full suspension bike I upgraded from. I find the bike incredibly capable both over the rough, on the road and when climbing. The geometry took a while to get used to and I may change the bars to a more downhill style. The gears are bit clunky when changing however I want to upgrade over time as spending £2k on a bike is a big outlay for me. The brakes are brilliant and inspire confidence on the downhill routes. It's a bit in the heavy side, but again I'll replace parts to lighten it. It took 8 months from order to collection but worth the wait. Overall really happy I purchased a Trek.

Great bike for the price
Amazing bike, here's the deal. I could go on and on about all the things that are good but other people have said it all. I live in the mountains of Colorado and was probably the first person to have the bike in the state as I bought it in early august of 2020 so having had it for a bit and road it a lot this thing is a beast and would recommend it 100%!

Great entry level to full suspension
I'm an older mountain biker and this bike was an upgrade from an old Trek Fuel EX8, 29" wheels. It's like night & day the comfort on gravel/dirt and stability over rocks & roots.
