Let me be clear that I LOVE my Speedgoat 5's and had high expectations of the 6's. Last summer, I trekked 8 days on a portion of the JMT and my 5's were fantastic! I did a 3 day trek with my 6's and on day 2 my Achilles was really hurting. This took me by surprise as I felt the heel area of the shoe was poking into the Achilles area. I overall do not like the design (even though they are very lightweight) of the 6's and now only wear them for day hiking and short distances. What I will say is that I recently did a day hike where there was about a foot of snow and I wore my 6's and micro spikes. MY FEET WERE DRY THE ENTIRE TIME! So the waterproofing is legit. I want to say that that I would only recommend these for day hiking. Until - the Speedgoat 6 mid GTX. How do I hate thee, let me count the ways:\n\n1. It's not a mid. It's a regular height shoe with a weird strip of swim diaper added around the ankle, that looks bad, feels worse, always gaps because the ridiculous velcro doesn't allow for enough tightening so additionally the tail of that sticks out, isn't keeping water out, and offers zero support.\n\n2. The flat woven laces fray immediately at their (flat) edges and are so ridiculously long (prob the same length from the old, real mids) that I knotted them FOUR times to get the length short enough to not trip on them.\n\n3. The sole layers separated from the shoe and from themselves, less than 60 days in. \n\n3. Vibram megagrip is a big selling point for me, but the rest of these soles are a weird, different and unforgiving foam - different from my 5's, which I know because I've compared them.\n\n4. They are making my feet hurt.\n\nAt first, I thought maybe it was me. So I gave them a real shot for 2 months. I'm not a push-the-envelope hiker, I'm middle aged and generally do daily non-technical elevation on a small local mountain; my last shot with these was on an easy NH 4k - again, no technical stuff, just the usual rock-and-root for 10 miles. But no, they remained horrible & I hate them more than I've hated any shoe.\n\nSeems to me that my old shoe has now morphed into a different shoe entirely. I'm not sure why Hoka would not have kept the core and the quality of the proven Speedgoat, raised the price point if you had to (I assume this is all the real motivation), and perhaps created a new shoe under the Speedgoat. It's more like a built in gather which is cool if you weren't someone who needs the ankle support. I love hokas & have been a customer since they first sold shoes & have been buying the mids since they came out and loved them for the ankle support they give as someone who has seriously unsturdy ankles due to injuries. Really hope they bring back the firm ankle support like the old ones. I already had my eye on some Speedgoats, so when I saw these at an added discount on top of the sale I nabbed them! These shoes did not disappoint. I took them for an 8 mile spin on Mt. Hood right out of the box and they were perfection on all the various terrain I subjected them to. I'm not sure what advantage the cuff around the ankle brings, but perhaps it will make more sense to me when the fall rains begin. They are a very pretty teal and dark blue. I would have preferred them without the 80's paint splatter look, but then again I was going for how they feel and perform rather than style. Worked well for water resistance. Good lugs for traction. The velcro on the cuff would also catch on my support stockings and tear them. For the love of Pete make the toe box wider (not the whole shoe wider) and the toe box taller. Not Everyone's toes are thin and flat to the ground. And I already own three pairs of HOKA. The interior fabric that works like an extra covering around the ankle is too tight. Plus, it seems that the lining is cut too small for the foot area, which makes the shoe seem smaller. There is a serious design flaw. I'm happy with my other three pairs. I purchased this style thinking it would be great for September 2025 in Alaska. When it was time for a new pair, I ordered the redesigned Speedgoat 6 Mid without much thought. I was disappointed upon arrival. The mid/high-top upper, which gave the shoe its signature ankle support, was replaced with a flimsy Velcro wrap. Hoping it might still perform, I wore it for a few days, but it was so uncomfortable I returned it and tracked down a pair of Speedgoat 5 Mid at a local store. This redesign feels like a downgrade. It's now a basic low-top shoe with no ankle support, losing what made the Mid great for rugged trails.
