One speed is all you need—a simple set-up gives kids confidence and helps them stay in control. Coaster brakes are simple and intuitive for kids to use—they just pedal backwards to stop! You can replace the saddle's integrated handle with an integrated light mount to boost visibility on family adventures and solo excursions. Like all Precaliber bikes, the frame is lower so it's easier for kids to stand over and hop on and off. You shouldn't buy your kid's bike where you buy your cereal—Unlike big box brands, Trek kids' bikes are assembled by people who know bikes.
We bought this bike for our 6 year old, he upgraded from the 16 inch precaliber. He has never needed training wheels and this is his third Trek. All I can say is that he really loves his bike. It was a nice transition with the bigger, wider tires and he loves the cool blue color.
Amazing bike. We got it for our 5 yr old, 43" tall kid. It was an upgrade from his 14" Bike. At first we thought this would be too big for him and a big jump from 14", but when we had him try out in the Summit bicycle store, he quickly gained control on it and rode atleast 20-30 min in their parking lot and then we were convinced and made the purchase. The low seat height helped, along with the wider all terrain tires. The bike has coaster and hand brakes.. also allowing the transition.. Price was the only negative factor... getting a $300 bike for a 5 year old ! But its been 4 weeks now and he is loving it and we are happy with the purchase.
