How to Choose a Backpacking Pack
How to Choose a Backpacking Pack
Choose Your Frame Type
- Internal Frame: The most popular choice, these sit close to the body and transfer weight to the hips to help you stay balanced on uneven terrain.
- External Frame: A great fit for carrying heavy or awkwardly shaped loads, offering strong support and improved airflow between your back and the pack.
- Frameless: Best for minimalist hikers focused on cutting weight, these simple packs work most effectively when carrying a light, efficient gear load.
Sizing & Fitting
The right pack capacity depends on your trip length: Weekend packs (30–60L) are ideal for 1–3 nights, while multi-day packs (60L+) provide the extra space needed for 3–5+ nights. To ensure a comfortable carry, prioritize torso length over height by measuring from the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones. When testing the fit, ensure the hip belt carries the majority of the weight to prevent shoulder strain on the trail.
