How to Size a Kids’ Bike
How to Size a Kids’ Bike
Steps for Finding the Right Size
- Understand Bike Size: Unlike adult bikes, kids’ bikes are sized by wheel diameter, typically ranging from 12 to 24 inches.
- Age, Height & Inseam: Age and height are helpful starting points, but inseam measurement provides the most accurate fit.
- Test the Fit: Your child should be able to straddle the bike with feet flat on the ground and reach the handlebars with a slight bend in their elbows.
General Guidelines for Bike Sizes
Below are general size guidelines for kids’ bikes:
- 12–14 Inch Bikes: Ideal for ages 2–4. Great for building confidence with balance bikes or pedal bikes with training wheels.
- 16-Inch Bikes: A common next step for ages 5–8, often featuring coaster brakes and designed as a transition from balance bikes.
- 20–24 Inch Bikes: Designed for more experienced riders ages 6–11, often including hand brakes and multiple gears.
