Golf Wedges Explained
Golf Wedges Explained
What’s the Difference Between Wedges?
Wedges vary by loft, which affects how high the ball flies and how far it travels. Higher lofted wedges produce higher, shorter shots, while lower lofted wedges provide longer distances and a lower ball flight.
Choosing the Right Wedge
A pitching wedge is the most common type of wedge with a loft ranging from 44° to 49°. Below is a general breakdown of the other three types:
- Sand Wedge: This is ideal for getting out of sand traps and tall grass with a loft range of 54° to 58°.
- Gap Wedge: This wedge “bridges the gap” between a pitching and a sand wedge with a loft between 50° to 54°.
- Lob Wedge: Designed for precision shots, this wedge has a loft range between 59° to 65°.
