There’s plenty to consider when choosing a pair of hiking boots. Finding the proper style, fit, and even breaking them in are all important for a comfortable experience on the trail. Our Footwear Experts outline some basic advice when looking for a new pair of hiking boots.
-
Hiking vs. Backpacking Boots: The first distinction to understand is the difference between hiking and backpacking boots. Hiking boots are typically lighter and designed for day hikes or shorter trips with lighter loads, offering more flexibility and comfort right out of the box. Backpacking boots are built for carrying heavier packs over longer distances, with stiffer midsoles, added ankle support, and more durable construction for rugged terrain.
-
Hiking Boot Fit & Feel: When trying on your new pair of hiking boots, make sure to wear the hiking socks and/or insoles that you plan to wear on your trip. Your toe box should fit snugly while still allowing your to move your toes. You’ll also want a thumb’s width space between your toes and the front of the boots.
-
Break in Your Boots: Don’t forget to spend some time breaking in your hiking boots. For shorter hikes in hiking boots, our Footwear Experts recommend 1 to 2 weeks, while for long hikes in backpacking boots, you’ll want to take up to 4 weeks.

Caring for you hiking boots will help them last longer, but most hiking boots will need to be replaced around 600 miles depending on quality, terrain, and conditions.
