Garmin LiveScope Technology Guide
Experienced anglers are turning to forward facing sonar technology like the Garmin LiveScope to better see underwater in real time. Along with this advanced, innovative technology comes a lot of questions. To help jumpstart your understanding, our Fishing Experts cover all the basics of Garmin LiveScope technology including the benefits, how it works, and the equipment needed when on the water.
What is Garmin LiveScope?
Garmin LiveScope is a revolutionary sonar technology that provides real-time, live scanning images of underwater structures, bait, and fish. Unlike traditional sonar, LiveScope offers a live view, allowing anglers to see fish react to lures and pinpoint key fishing areas.
Benefits of Using Garmin LiveScope Technology
-
Real-Time Underwater Views: See structure, bait, and fish in detail as it happens, not after it's passed by.
-
Maximize Fishing Time: Quickly locate and identify fish so you can fish in productive areas.
-
Refine Lure Presentation: By seeing how the fish react to your setup, anglers can make decisions to increase catch rate.
-
Versatility: Use in a variety of fishing environments including rivers, lakes, and saltwater scenarios.
How Does Garmin LiveScope Work?
Garmin LiveScope uses a special transducer called a phased array transducer that sends out pulses of sonar waves and uses advanced processing to provide a real-time, dynamic view of what’s under water. This transducer can electronically steer the sonar beam in different directions, offering three different viewing modes: Down, Forward, and Perspective. Plus, the image return is much clearer and more detailed than traditional sonar.
-
LiveScope Down Mode: Provides a real-time view of what is directly beneath the boat, typically down to 200 feet.
-
LiveScope Forward Mode: Provides a real-time view of what is in front of the boat, typically out to 200 feet.
-
Perspective Mode: Provides a wide, angled view of the underwater environment, giving a unique perspective for seeing structure and fish around the boat. Frequently used in shallow waters.
What You Need to Use Garmin LiveScope
When rigging you boat to use Garmin LiveScope, make sure you have all the necessary accessories:
-
LiveScope Transducer & Sonar Module: You need the transducer to send and receive the sonar signals and the module (sometimes called “black box”) to process the sonar return into real-time images. These two components can be purchased as a bundle or separately.
-
Compatible Garmin Fish Finder: This is what will display the images. Please note that not all Garmin fish finders are compatible with LiveScope technology, so it’s important to read all the product details.
-
Ethernet Cable: This connects the LiveScope module to your compatible Garmin fish finder. It’s recommended to get a 20-foot cable to make sure you have plenty of length.
-
Power Cable: This will connect your LiveScope module to a power source. This is typically included when you purchase your sonar module.
-
Power Source: You can power your system with your traditional boat battery, but many anglers choose to use a separate battery. This helps to avoid overloading the boat battery.
