How to Wash a Jersey
For parents with young athletes, tackling grass stains, dirt, and odor is part of the game, just off the field. No matter the sport—football, baseball, soccer, and more, stains and odors are inevitable. That’s why our Experts are sharing the basic steps they follow to keep their budding athletes’ jerseys looking and smelling fresh.
Step-by-Step Guide to Washing a Jersey
Follow these simple steps to make sure their jersey is ready for game day!
1. Pre-Treat Stains Immediately
This can be tough when you’re a busy parent, but the sooner you treat tough stains like grass, dirt, and sweat, the better. Gently dab (don’t rub) the area with cold water, apply your preferred stain remover, and let stand 15-30 minutes before washing.
2. Turn Jersey Inside Out
This helps keep the logos and numbers protected when in the wash.
3. Use Cold Water & Mild Detergent
Using a mild detergent, wash the jersey on a gentle cycle with cold water. You can use any preferred detergent, but there are specific options for sports clothing to help eliminate odor even more.
4. Check Stains & Repeat If Needed
Before the jersey dries, it’s important to make sure the stains are fully removed. If there are still stains, repeat steps 1-3.
5. Hang Dry
It’s best to avoid putting the jersey in the dryer. This help reduce the chances of shrinking and damaging the graphics.
You can follow these steps for other athletic clothing like baseball or football pants.
Taking a few extra minutes to properly wash and care for your athlete’s jersey can make all the difference in keeping it looking fresh all season long. Whether it’s the first game or the playoffs, your athlete will be ready for the field! If you have additional questions, stop into your local SCHEELS to speak with an Expert.
