Mossberg Maverick 88 Security/Field 12 Gauge Combo Shotgun

It seems like these are shipping from the factory with less than perfect machining, causing faults and rough action. My girfriend and I each bought one of these. When I opened my box, the pin holding the trigger assembly had fallen out and the trigger assembly was not attached to the gun. The problem was that the spring that is supposed to keep the pin in place would not stay seated, and would pop out of place when inserting the pin...due to there not being enough plastic material in the trigger body to keep the spring in place. Lots of users online complaining about this-either new out of the box, or after a few months of use. Most people are solving this problem by ordering a new threaded pin that does not rely on the keeper spring. I solved this issue by making a plug from a polycarbonate shim and filling the spring seat void...thus locking the spring in place. \nMy girlfriends trigger was in better shape, but could still be induced to pop the spring. I put the plug in her gun as well as a preventative. But her gun would not cycle the pump action after dry firing without an incredible amount of force. Something was sticking, and whoever put it together at the factory must have known this. It was almost unusable as is. I dug into the gun and found the problem...a significant burr on the top front tip of the action lock lever (I compared it to my gun which had a pretty smooth action). I filed and diamond polished, and it solved the problem. I took the time to polish out some other burrs while I was in there. Lots of repeated use probably would have smoothed things out, but why not just de burr and polish while new instead of waiting for parts to break in.\nThe customer service at Mossberg is awesome...they were eager to assist and send new parts for free. I've read as much from other customers on line...so this is encouraging. Mossberg wants you to be happy with their product. \nIf you are looking for a very affordably priced shotgun, and are mechanical enough to inspect all the moving parts and are ready to de burr or modify...or have a friend or gunsmith help you out with that, then it is a good deal.
