I now own the 3500, 4500, and 5500 models. My fishing is mainly northeast surf casting (Sandy Hook and Martha's Vineyard), and for this I prefer the 3500 and 4500. I find the 5500 to be a bit heavy and oversized for surf casting, so it's rarely used. I'm sure the 4500 can handle anything I'd be after, which is bluefish, striper, albacore, and bonito. Last year I landed a great 13 lb alibi on the 3500, with a matching Penn rod. It was a fantastic fight and the fish was good for the daily 1st Place False Albacore prize in the Derby (see photo). I like the smooth, quiet retrieve and excellent line lay. Casting is smooth and the bail is reliable, for the most part. I only snapped off about three lures due to the bail slamming closed on me during the cast, probably these incidents were my fault and happened mostly at night. I compared these reels to the Japanese brands and found Penn to be the best value overall. The build quality is definitely there. It feels like it was made to fight big game. The drag is super smooth and can handle large fish. The all metal parts give you a guarantee that this reel will take a beating. And with almost 350 yards of 40lb braided line on the spool, those Striped Bass stand zero chance! My only issue was that when I was spooling the fresh line, it spooled towards the bottom and I need to remove one of the washers. Hopefully it can correct itself as I continue to use it.
