In my opinion it needs to go back to the drawing board and be revamped. When in down position with one bike (have 2 bike version) next to the car, the outer tray just sits there obviously. The wheel tray is obviously folded in and the wheel hook is folded down to fit under the tilt wheel tray with the strap. The problem being the wheel hook is hanging free except where it touches the tilt wheel tray. There is no lock, strap or pin to hold in place (the front tray and wheel lock goes across a support surface and can’t go anywhere). Even though the red lever is brought down and “locks” next to the tilt wheel tray nothing stops it from moving and there is no support under it like the front wheel lock has. So going down the road- the hook arm actually jostled itself loose and went beyond horizontal to actually swing down and drag on the road and wore the end down like a grinder and the cable came out as well. A passerby got my attention and told me about it because you can’t see any part of it from your mirrors. So, now I have a spanking brand new bike rack less than a week old (yes I watched videos and read the instructions manual) that is damaged. Either attach a support to go under the hook arm or attach a pin or a strap or a stop that holds it from going beyond horizontal to solve the issue. I shouldn’t have to spend $500+ dollars to use a bungee strap to keep it in place. Also as for the lock cables they need to be better quality, longer and a system that lets you have a spring tension to keep them from getting knocked out on their own instead of a push pull method that is not very secure. First bike rack. First Yakima product. Salesman pointed me to another brand at first but they were out of it so I went with this in stock. Disappointed yes. Only time will tell. Another thing I think that needs to done is allowing a sliding tray that lets u accommodate for your bike instead of everything being fixed in place. Some bikes have shorter wheelbases and some have longer but there is no adjustment to get your tires to “fit in the wheel tray or folded wheel tray”. Another issue in my opinion. We've transported two ebikes on it, and it felt very secure. These racks are so easy to load the bikes on and nothing touches the bike frames. If I had one complaint about the new one, it is that the rear tire strap and ratchet assembly are not as good as the first one. The new release lever is difficult to release and the ratcheting feature has been taken away. I feel for anyone that runs into on the road. With that being said, I have a 29er with 2.25-5 tires. The part you fold out that the front wheel nests into does not allow the fire to nest deep enough. The arm needs to be longer. It will cause the bike to roll out of the wheel cradle as you go around turns and go down bump roads as the rack shakes back and forth. Even with the arm pushed tightly on the tire it still moves. I have been able to mitigate this some by airing dow the tire but it does not help much. My recommendation to Yakima is to make the fold out wheel cradle a tinge longer. I am not sure if a larger wheel cup would do anything. After not even a full year with this new rack I received a crack along the weld on this rack. I trusted Yakima to file a warranty claim as this is, what I assumed a manufacturers defect as this defect appeared along a fabrication point. However due to me hauling around my size large bike with a wheelbase above 48”, I was denied a warranty and am left with an unusable rack. Handles 2 bikes with no problem and no issues to the frame. However, if carrying 1 bike caution is needed to ensure the outside hold down is secured. If not, the hold down can bounce out of the clip and swing down to the road. Mine did this and rubbed off the lock (cable end). Luckily it did not catch anything and rip the arm off. Why is there not a stop that prevents the arm from swinging down past the horizontal? This seems to be an easy fix that would prevent something serious from happening.
