The whole thing is brand new but I ended up having to give up on putting the cover on for the time being. The bite valve is the same size as the tube and is difficult to stretch over even without the cover. The cover completely encapsulates the bite valve so there is no way to stretch it over. The instructions say to twist it on while wet but all that did was cause my bite valve to get twisted around inside the cove. All tubes should come with a cover preinstalled since who wants to drink dirt? $8 add on for a little piece of plastic and the most frustrating install I have encountered. I know I will need to take it off to clean it and put it back on each time and the thought alone makes me want to return the whole thing.
