Mouthguard Maintenance and Care

Wearing a mouthguard is one of the best, simplest, and least expensive ways to protect your teeth from common sports injuries like cracked teeth, fractured roots, and tooth intrusions. Whether you are a competitive professional or novice athlete, or a parent of a young player, our Experts break  down exactly how to properly clean your guard, store it safely in an appropriate case, and know exactly when it’s time to replace it so you can stay fully protected and hygienic.

How to Mold and Use Your Mouthguard

When it comes to molding your new mouthguard, always follow the directions provided on the packaging, as the exact steps can vary based on the specific brand and version of the guard. Typically, non-generic mouthguards will come with precise instructions on how to achieve a customized fit for your mouth. If it uses a standard boil-and-bite method:

  • Boil water, place the guard in a heat-safe bowl, and soak it for the exact time listed on the package.

  • Remove it carefully, bite down gently to mold it, then suck out excess water and press along your lips and cheeks for a snug fit.

  • Keep it in place until it sets, then rinse with cold water. Use the manufacturer’s guide as your main reference.

Mouthguard Cases

Investing in a proper mouthguard case is vital for keeping your appliance hygienic, odor-free, and safe when it is not in use. Using a designated container protects the mouthguard from damage and bacteria, and makes it easier for you or your athlete to keep track of the mouthguard.

Make sure your case has enough room to comfortably fit your custom or boil-and-bite mouthguard and features simple, wipe-clean surfaces. Keep in mind that putting a clean mouthguard into a dirty case simply transfers germs right back to the appliance. To ensure a truly clean resting place, you should be cleaning your case regularly using the same methods as cleaning your mouthguard.

Cleaning Your Mouthguard

Because your mouthguard is worn inside your mouth during intense activity, keeping it clean is especially important for your health. To keep your appliance free of bacteria, mold, and bad odors, you should develop a consistent routine of rinsing and cleaning it after every single use, as well as giving it a quick rinse before you put it in if possible. Regularly washing your gear also gives you the perfect opportunity to inspect it for any signs of wear or damage.

Our Experts recommend that you use a toothbrush, antibacterial spray, or soap and water for cleaning. SCHEELS does offer a specified mouthguard cleaning spray for all of our cleaning and sanitation needs.

Replacing Your Mouthguard

When replacing a mouthguard, it is important to note that regular cleaning and maintenance should lengthen the lifespan of your mouthguard. However, there are a few reasons that your mouthguard may need to be replaced. Mouthguards should be replaced about once per year or once per sporting season to prevent excessive wear due to biting down. Other damage to the mouthguard that indicates it may be time for a new one includes:

  • cracks or jagged edges

  • warping

  • discoloration

  • odor (can be avoided with regular cleaning)

Keep a close eye on how your child's sports mouthguard fits throughout the season. Growing athletes typically need to size up every six months, or whenever the guard starts feeling too tight.

Just like any piece of essential athletic equipment, a sports mouthguard will only keep you safe and healthy when it is properly maintained. Ultimately, taking the time to maintain your equipment helps you stay healthy and fully protected so you can focus on the game. Ensure you are always game-ready by investing in a durable protective case, maintaining a regular cleaning schedule, or ordering a replacement mouthguard today.
