Chasing a Once-in-a-Lifetime Turkey

Turkeys have always been a fun, unpredictable challenge for me. Unlike deer season, where I often target specific bucks, turkey hunting has usually been more opportunistic—shooting whatever comes around. But two seasons ago, I encountered a bird that completely changed the game.

This wasn’t just any turkey. This was a once-in-a-lifetime bird with not one, but two massive beards, something I’d never seen before. I’d hunted multi-bearded turkeys in the past, but this one was special. From that moment on, I was determined to track him.

A Season of Near Misses

Over that season, I followed his movements as best I could. I filled both my tags on other birds across different farms, but that double-bearded turkey always eluded me. There was even one unforgettable day when a friend shot a turkey and this bird ran right up and perched on top of it—20 yards away, with a tag still in my pocket. That moment lit a fire in me; I had to hunt this bird.

Offseason Challenges and New Access

The offseason brought its own challenges. I lost access to the farm where he lived due to a land sale, forcing me to start over. I eventually secured permission on a neighboring property for the following spring, unsure if the turkey had survived a harsh winter. In February 2024, during early scouting, I got my first glimpse of him—alive and well.

Patterning the Bird

I spent the weeks leading up to Nebraska’s early archery season in late March patterning him, tracking his habits and movements like I would a prized buck. When the hunt finally began, he was cautious. Running with just one other tom, they kept their distance from the rest of the flock.

Patience Pays Off

Setting up in a bean field with my friend Dylan, who hadn’t seen this bird in person yet, we watched in awe as he approached. Early season meant the turkeys weren’t overly aggressive, so we had to take a 30-yard shot, farther than I normally like in archery hunting. My arrow hit slightly back of where I wanted, and the bird ran down into a creek bottom. The rain started just as I reached him, but I recovered him safely.

It was a perfect ending to a hunt that tested patience, persistence, and strategy. Targeting one specific turkey, studying his patterns, and hunting him like a deer made this experience unforgettable. That double-bearded tom is a trophy I’ll always cherish, and a story I’ll always remember.
