What Is a Spike Camp? Master the Backcountry Hunt

a hunter in the backcountry with meat in his hunting pack climbing a mountain

For many hunters, the hardest part of the season isn't finding the game—it’s staying where the game lives. If you find yourself hiking three miles into the timber every morning only to hike three miles back to your truck at dark, you are burning calories and daylight that should be spent on the hunt.

That is where the spike camp comes in. Below, our Hunting Experts break down the purpose of a spike camp and a few luxuries to pack on your hunt.

What is a Spike Camp?

A spike camp is a lightweight camp set up deep in the wilderness, away from your main base camp. The goal of a spike camp is simple: Stay closer to the game. A spike camp helps you make the most of every day in the field:

  • Go Farther: Get beyond the pressure and closer to unbothered game like elk and mule deer.

  • Stay Longer: Stay in hunting country without trekking back to basecamp every night.

  • Hunt Smarter: Spend less time hiking and more time glassing, stalking, and taking advantage of every opportunity.

Where to Set Up Your Spike Camp

There are a few considerations when setting up your spike camp:

  • Keep Your Distance: You want to be close to the game, but not right in their environment. Make sure to set up slightly away to keep your scent and noise from spooking them.

  • Stay Near Water: It's a good idea to set up close to a source of water. Filtering water at a spike camp is easier than hauling water with you.

  • Utilize Natural Windbreaks: Look for rock faces or heavy timber to protect your shelter from the wind

Spike Camp Must-Haves

Packing light doesn’t mean cutting corners. Every ounce matters, but a few smart comforts go a long way.

"Comfort is key when it comes to a base camp. After a long day of hard hiking, I like to be able to recover as best as I can. I make sure to bring plenty of food and the right sleep system to get the best rest that I can. I also have a set of camp shoes waiting so that I can get out of my boots as soon as I drop my pack."

Here are a few luxuries Hunting Experts suggest:

  • Recovery Footwear: After miles in stiff, heavy hunting boots, you’re feet will need to breathe. Choosing a pair of lightweight sandals like Crocs give them a much needed break.

  • Fuel to Meal Prep: A hot meal is needed when on the hunt. Bringing a slightly larger fuel canister so you know you have plenty of fuel for hot meals and coffee.

  • Field Repair Kit: Duct tape or electrical tape can save the day when gear or tents need a field repair.

  • Power Bank: Keep a reliable power bank handy for your phone or satellite communicator.

  • Sleep System: A quality sleeping bag and pad will help you get better rest.

With the right approach, your spike camp becomes more than just a place to sleep, it’s your base for going farther, staying longer, and making every moment in the mountains count.
