How to Size Youth Golf Clubs

Ensuring that young golfers have the properly sized clubs sets them up for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience as they grow and develop their skills. Our Experts outlined everything there is to know about selecting the proper golf club size for your junior golfer, from understanding sizing basics to knowing when to transition to adult clubs.

How Kids’ Golf Club Sizing Works

Proper club sizing sets a young golfer up for proper swing form and improves overall performance. Junior golf clubs are typically designed to be lighter with flexible shafts. Since kids’ height is highly variable, club sizes correspond to their height rather than age.

Finding the Perfect Fit

When sizing golf clubs for a junior, consider their height, arm length, and swing speed. Size charts can offer a starting point, typically matching height to club length. As a rule of thumb, the club's length should allow the player to naturally hold the club with slightly bent arms while ensuring the clubhead lies flat during setup, which ensures more consistent contact with the ball.

Fitting and Measurement Techniques

When measuring height at home, have your junior golfer wear shoes to better replicate course conditions. If their golf shoes are spiked, have them stand on carpet or grass or wear regular shoes on flat flooring.

Youth Golf Club Size Chart

Refer to the following chart as a starting point to determine the correct size of clubs. Most junior golf clubs come in a complete set; if your player is between sizes for any clubs, choose the next size up to allow some room to grow. Ideally, they’ll be in the middle of a suggested height range for a golf set.

Note: These recommended lengths are guidelines only and can vary by vendor. Always refer to the information on a specific product model.

Signs of Outgrowing Golf Clubs

It’s important to monitor the player's performance and comfort regularly. Signs a junior has outgrown their clubs include difficulty swinging, decreased accuracy, or physical discomfort. We recommend reassessing the clubs every season, especially during growth spurts.

When to Transition to Adult Clubs

Kids should move to adult clubs once they reach a height where youth clubs no longer support their swing posture or if their skill level exceeds what their current clubs offer. This is typically around the ages of 12-14, depending on their physical growth and playing style.
