I only have older versions of this model to compare it to, and it seems that the older versions had a tighter weave. The new version also had several irregularities before even putting them in the wash (some of the weave had areas that had pulled up). So far they're very comfortable and warm; we'll see how they hold up. I liked these a lot more than the mountaineer version even though that one is thicker because the toe seam on that one did not align well, and the cuff is too tall and tight in one specific spot, versus these have a uniform elastic going up and down the cuff. If you are looking for a specific smartwool thick sock, this is the one I would opt for and between going large or small, I would order a size down if you're in-between. At first, at a local shoe store, when they sold out, the new people didn't carry them, so I started buying them online. They are comfortable, I get the extra padding, and they really do help. I also have the longer version, but these are better for my climate as the longer ones definitely keeps me warmer, but my area doesn't normally get cold enough to justify wearing them as often.
