Product Description

The Commander X + Pack is a complete system for the multi day backcountry hunter. The combination of an internal frame meat hauling pack with a detachable 4000 cu in pack bag offers the ability to pack in gear to a spike camp and haul out meat when the task is completed. The Commander X frame has lashing system that incorporates a compressed wing system and a lower shelf to secure loads to the frame. The pack bag can then be reattached with a series of compression straps over the load. When the meat-hauling frame is not needed the pack bag attaches to the frame with zippers for a secure fit to the frame for a comfortable carry. The frame is comprised of dual aluminum stays with channeled high-density polyethylene frame for rigid carry.

Durable and functional
I bought this pack for use on my first trip to Kodiak, Alaska. I loaded it down with about seventy pounds of caribou and headed back to base camp. No complaints with the pack. My buddies had Kuiu packs and both of their packs were squeaky- not this one. It was a good investment. I look forward to using it again.

High Quality - Absolute Best Value Available
Incredible buy. The frame is great for day hiking and the whole pack is more than enough for 3-5 days worth of gear and a heavy pack out of meat. This system has a butterfly shelf similar to competitive packs so you can pack out your kill and all of your gear on top of it. The packs give anything made by Mystery Ranch a major run for their money. I'm a bit of a backpack aficionado and own many different packs for both hunting and backcountry backpacking. The design on these packs is as good as a Mystery Ranch Metcalf and the quality in the way of straps and buckles is on par with Osprey. I dragged my feet a bit when reading mixed reviews and finally pulled the trigger on this. The Commander X is by far the best bang for the buck available for a backcountry hunter. I'd put this pack head to head against others that are 2X the price any day. Aplz also has outstanding customer service. Any issues and they are quick to respond and help take care of it.

Great pack
I've been using this pack for 2.5 yrs. I've packed out multiple animals with it (mule deer / antelope). I've hunted elk, deer, and antelope. I've used it from camping/scouting trips, day hunts, and week long backcountry hunts. It works great.

Pros: cost, versatility, adjustable.

Cons: weight, hip belt padding.

The biggest misconception about this pack that I've heard multiple times is that you cant adjust the torso length. You can. In fact Alps provides a poly sheet to break the hook/loop which allows you to adjust the torso length (like kuiu packs). The only big con is the somewhat lacking hip belt padding. It's not a huge deal but for loads over 70lbs more padding would be nice. It's a little heavy unloaded too, but for the price great.

Almost that time of the year
After reading into tons of reviews on this plus many others, and having an Exo pack in an online shopping cart. I pulled the trigger on the Commander X. Was originally looking at the tan bag but the cammo one got restocked! It sounds like the brown one was made out of a louder fabric. The cammo version is dead quiet and soft. Extremely durable from what I could tell. Roughly pulled on all the components and was impressed on the construction. However the internal frame is a bit flimsy. Should be good to pack out a heavy load, but I previously owned the LL Bean Carryall which was almost an Identical meat haller frame (google it) and it's twice as rigid. However the shoulder straps weren't adjustable, the Commander X definitely wins in the adjustability aspect. It should be perfect for a 4 to 6 day backpacking hunt. I have a good feeling you won't find anything better at this price point. Trust me I Looked!

Not for Archery
Bought this for ELK Archery Hunting last season. The idea is nice, but it has many flaws: 1.) it squeaks...EVERYWHERE. I thought it was buckles, but it's not those. It's mostly where the straps cross. and the internal frame squeaks too. I put sticks between the straps to keep them from rubbing. $350 backpack and my buddies are laughing at me (and don't want to be anywhere near me) cuz they're rocking dead silent cheap packs. (one a badlands and the other a tenzing) 2.) It's material is not for stalkers. Any branch you duck under or brush against will scrape, loudly. 3.) There are a ton of straps, which is great when you need to pack an elk out. However, most of the time you're spending way too much time figuring out how to put the damn thing back together when all you wanted was to get to something, like some trail mix or a bandage for a small cut out. It goes together okay when you have the main pack, but when you're actually hunting, you'll only take the frame and it is not ergonomic. (does this flap or that flap go first?...where does this buckle connect? ...why does this one have no buckle at all? ...why are these zippers exposed?) 4.) the fanny pack is a joke/gimmic 5.) zippers are loud and the space between the hip pockets and the packet is not large enough for a sidearm. Fits bear spray well though. 6.) Bottom is not as big as you might think. I can fit my sleeping bag in, but not my bed roll 7.) The top sticks up high above your shoulders. If you duck under something, it will get caught. 8.) The water bag holder isn't very deep and my bladder was exposed out the top while hunting (frame only)., so what did I like about it: 1.) It is comfy. I hiked 10-15 miles over tough terrain every day for 6 days and never had any pinching, pressure points, sores, or anything. Very comfortable. (and I have degeyotnerative disks) 2.) Like the coyote brown color. 3.) Hiking in, when you don't care about noise, it holds a lot. 4.) the frame is light 5.) it's good material that will last a long time, but that's probably why it's so loud.

This is a great pack. I was never sore from using this ...
Well I have this pack for 4 months now and I have used it on several hunting trips. I have loaded it down with approximately 40 lbs. I have taken several 5 miles hikes with it. This is a great pack. I was never sore from using this pack. A lot of thought went into this pack. It's a backpack, hunting pack, fanny pack. And a meat hauling pack. I can only comet on the use of this pack for a hunting pack. I plan to use this pack this fall for a backpack hunting trip. I am very positive this pack will work great. My only complaint is the chest strap. I just don't understand why these companies do not make the chest strap bigger. I am not that big of a person but the strap surly could use another 12 inches of material. My fix for this was I used on of the extra straps to extend the chest strap. Thanks to my daughter inlaw who did the sowing. Problem solved. Other than that this is a great pack. Very comfortable.

I took it hunting the first time this year for elk season. I carried approximately 55 lbs in the pack. It is very comfortable and highly adjustable. I only have two minor complaints. One is a small squeak I can't seem to identify that occurs when moving. I believe it’s the frame next to my ear. The other is that all of the straps can be overwhelming at first. But that’s how you get all of the adjustments. Overall the pack is solid with no hot spots and can carry quite a load. I particularly like the removable hood and front pack as well as the rifle sling.
