The spandex material and the padding is different plus the fit is much better. I'm giving them 5 starts because 4 stars seems like a dis and I'm happy with my purchase. I miss the real chamois but these are good. Concerned there's no tie at the waist if the elastic gets loose. I wore them for the first time today and the slightly extra padding compared with the old school chamois is a good compromise. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned some other shorts ride up my gluteal cleft - unpleasant. \n\nPS - to Pearl Izumi - I'm not an expert rider but I'm no intermediate either. I've got thousands of road miles on SLX bikes with gen 1 DuraAce and have transitioned to MTB because I don't want to get slaughtered by a distracted driver.
